Under a nationwide conservative-led movement, Kentucky’s GOP lawmakers on Wednesday overrode the governor’s veto of a bill that would have prohibited transgender children from receiving gender-affirming medical care and restricted which restrooms they could use in public schools.
The Republican-majority Kentucky General Assembly decisively voted to override the veto issued by Democratic Governor Andy Beshear last week. Beshear is up for reelection in November.
The act, according to the bill’s backers, was passed to prevent young people from receiving gender-affirming medical care that they would later come to regret.
Beshear claimed that the legislation will lead to an increase in teen suicides and allow for excessive government meddling in individual healthcare choices.
To prevent the medical provisions of the measure from going into effect in around three months, the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky threatened to file a lawsuit.
The law will allow teachers to refuse to use the chosen pronouns of transgender students, forbid gender reassignment surgery for minors, stop the use of puberty inhibitors, and outlaw gender-affirming hospital services.
The bill is one of several national initiatives to limit LGBTQ rights. There are restrictions on drag shows, discussions about gender identity in schools, and the engagement of transgender people in sports, among other measures.

After the approval of laws restricting or forbidding medical treatments for transgender kids in around ten other states, West Virginia passed a measure on Wednesday barring gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
