Money has been made by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in significant amounts. The animated action film from Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment, and Nintendo is on track to become the first 2023 release to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
Universal is confident enough in the projections to claim victory even though “Mario Bros.” isn’t expected to cross the desired barrier until the conclusion of the weekend. In 26 days, if predictions come true, the video game adaptation will pass the $1 billion threshold.
With its initial release on April 5, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has dominated the box office for the entire month. Even after four weekends since its release, it continues to be the most popular release on domestic charts. By Monday, “Mario Bros.” appears to be hovering at a North American and international gross of $487.5 million and $533 million, respectively, just shy of the $1 billion mark.

It will follow “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World Dominion,” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” as the sixth game to achieve the feat since the start of the global COVID pandemic. “Super Mario Bros.” has so far earned the most money of any release in 2023. In just its second week of release, the movie soared past the previous record holder, Disney’s Marvel sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($474 million).
Despite the fact that the summer movie schedule is packed with potential blockbusters like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Fast X,” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Mario Bros.” appears to be finishing with a sizable global total that will be difficult for any movie to top.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” starring Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black as the voices of the well-known video game characters, follows Italian American plumbers Mario and Luigi as they attempt to defend the magical Mushroom Kingdom from the wrathful, fire-breathing Bowser, who also happens to be the annoying suitor of the enigmatic Princess Peach.
