In her post, she mentioned that the famous musician peacefully left us in his home in Hilo, Hawaii, surrounded by his closest family. He had been bravely fighting a strong kind of liver cancer since the middle of 2021.
Last year, Bruddah Waltah showed his strong spirit when he appeared at a concert on Hawaii’s Big Island. This concert was organized by other musicians to honor him and raise money for his medical bills. He talked openly during the event about his struggles with cancer and how he wasn’t sure when he could perform again.
Walter Aipolani, who was 68 years old, was an amazing Hawaiian singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was known as “Bruddah Waltah,” a name that stuck with him after performing in Waikiki during the 1980s.
He was even called the “Father of Hawaiian Reggae” because of his big influence on Hawaiian-style reggae music. His band, Island Afternoon, played a big part in making this music popular worldwide during the 1980s and 1990s.

There was a special concert on the Big Island last July to honor him and raise money. Many famous Hawaiian musicians performed, like Mark Yamanaka and Friends, Randy Lorenzo, Ben Kaili and Friends, and more.
The concert took place at the Palace Theatre in Hilo, which is where Bruddah Waltah was from, making it even more special.
Even though he couldn’t be there in person, his influence was felt through two songs that were played during the concert. These songs were later included in a video series from the Palace Theater called “Live From the Empty Palace.”
One song was “Church in an Old Hawaiian Town,” a beloved tune from 1938, and the other was “To Love Somebody,” showing his love for The Bee Gees.
Outside of concerts, Bruddah Waltah was somewhat active on social media, especially Facebook. He would sometimes share updates about his health, and his last update was in May 2023. His impact on Hawaiian music will always be remembered, showing how much he cared and contributed to the music scene.
