Byron Antron Leftwich, a former quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons, was born on January 14, 1980, and is a former American football coach.

He played college football for Marshall University, where he twice won the MAC Most Valuable Player award. In the 2003 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him with the seventh overall pick.

For the first four years of his career, Leftwich started for the Jaguars then played the rest of his time as a backup for the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played for the Steelers, who took home the Super Bowl XLIII trophy.

Leftwich was a letterwinner in baseball, basketball, and football while he was a student at Howard D. Woodson High School in Washington, DC. As a senior in 1997, he was given an honorable mention on The Washington Post’s All-Met football team. In his senior year, he also played basketball and made the first-team All-DCIAA East.

At Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, Leftwich excelled. He won the 2000 Motor City Bowl MVP award. When he led East Carolina to a 64-61 victory in overtime in the 2001 GMAC Bowl against future teammate David Garrard, Leftwich rose to prominence.

In addition, he is remembered for being carried by linemen Steve Sciullo and Joey Stepp while playing again after breaking his shin, specifically the left tibia, and leading his team to a 17-point comeback against Akron in November 2002, though Marshall still lost 34-20.

Nationwide “MACtion” crowds watched Leftwich’s teams because ESPN started airing Mid-American Conference (MAC) games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays—days without other football on television—in 2000.

Leftwich is credited with helping the MAC garner more national recognition, along with fellow Marshall alums Chad Pennington, Randy Moss, and Doug Chapman; Marshall is currently a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

Leftwich completed 939 of 1,442 passes (65.1%) for 11,903 yards, 89 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions during his time at Marshall. His 12,090 total offense yards on 1,632 plays put him second all-time at the institution after Pennington.

Following a productive collegiate career at Marshall University, Byron Leftwich was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft, seventh overall. After that, he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009), Atlanta Falcons (2007), Pittsburgh Steelers (2008), and Pittsburgh Steelers (2010–2012).

Even more awards include two MAC Most Valuable Player (2001, 2002) and two MAC Offensive Player of the Year (2001, 2002) titles. He was also the XLIII Super Bowl champion.

On May 9, 2016, Byron was hired by the Arizona Cardinals as a coaching intern for training camp. He was hired by the Cardinals as their quarterback coach that same year. He was appointed interim offensive coordinator on October 19, 2018. On January 8, 2019, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired him as their offensive coordinator.
