Kevin Byard Professional Career
Byard tweeted on November 22, 2015, that he would play in the 2016 Senior Bowl after accepting the offer. Over the week of Senior Bowl exercises, he impressed everyone with his ball-hawking and athleticism.
Byard met with Falcons personnel throughout the week. Byard was not among the sixty defensive backs invited to the NFL Combine this year. He attended Middle Tennessee’s pro day on March 31, 2016, alongside 18 teammates.
Byard was taken first in the third round (64th overall) by the Tennessee Titans in 2016. Byard became Titans’ property. Byard was the 24th player drafted from Middle Tennessee State and the highest since Tyrone Calico (second round, 60th overall) was drafted by the Titans in 2003.
The Titans drafted Calico, the top Middle Tennessee State player in 2003. The Tennessee Titans signed Byard on July 18, 2016, with a $897,060 signing bonus. Contract value: $3.63 million over four years.
In the Titans’ 26–16 loss to the Oakland Raiders, Byard got his first start of the season and had eight solo tackles. On October 1, 2017, the Titans lost 57–14 to the Houston Texans despite his season-high nine tackles and first career interception off Deshaun Watson.
On July 24, 2019, Byard signed a five-year, $70.5 million, $31 million guaranteed contract with the Titans, becoming the highest-paid safety in NFL history. In Week 17, the Panthers defeated 27–13 to the Dallas Cowboys despite Byard’s two interceptions. In 2022, Byard started all 17 games.
