Josh Groban Career

Groban, then 16 years old, was introduced to Grammy-winning producer and arranger David Foster as well as future manager Brian Avnet by his vocal instructor, Seth Riggs, towards the end of 1997.

Groban was getting ready for his studies at Carnegie Mellon at the time and had no prior recording experience. As a rehearsal singer for David Foster, Groban performed at a number of high-profile occasions, such as Gray Davis’s inauguration as governor of California in January 1999 and the 1999 Grammy Awards, where he sang Foster’s “The Prayer” with Céline Dion in place of Andrea Bocelli.

Avnet claims that Groban needed to be talked out of his extreme nervousness about filling in for Bocelli. After his performance, Rosie O’Donnell, the hostess of the show, asked him to come on her program the next week, which led to an appearance on Ally McBeal.

In the May 2001 season finale, Groban portrayed Malcolm Wyatt, a character created by David E. Kelley. His performance—which included the song “You’re Still You”—was so well-received by spectators that the show got up to 8,000 emails.

His self-titled debut album, which was released in November 2001, featured the song. Just two weeks after the release of his debut album, Groban was requested to return the following season to reprise his part as Wyatt, performing “To Where You Are”. According to Avnet, these circumstances essentially launched Groban’s career.

On November 20, 2020, Groban released his studio album Harmony. Groban appeared as the Beast in the TV special Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration in December 2022.

Under the direction of Thomas Kail, Groban made a comeback to Broadway in a revival of the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, playing the title role opposite Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett and Jordan Fisher as Anthony Hope.

Previews started on February 26 and the show officially debuted on March 26, 2023, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It was well received and got eight Tony Award nominations, including one each for Groban and Ashford.
