Thierry Henry Career

Monaco dispatched scout Arnold Catalano to watch 13-year-old Henry play in 1990. Henry scored all six goals in a 6–0 win. Catalano asked him to join Monaco without a trial.

Catalano suggested that Henry undergo a course at the top INF Clairefontaine academy, and despite the director’s hesitation owing to Henry’s poor school results, he went on to join Arsène Wenger’s Monaco as a young player.

After signing with Monaco, Henry made his professional debut on 31 August 1994 in a 2–0 loss to Nice. Wenger thought Henry should play as a striker, but he put him on the left wing because he thought his pace, ball control, and skill would be better against full defenders than center-backs.

Henry was voted French Young Footballer of the Year in 1996 after a slow start to his Monaco career. In 1996–97, he helped the team win Ligue 1. He achieved a French record with seven Champions League goals in 1997–98, helping his club reach the semi-finals.

In his third season, he earned his first national team cap and helped win the 1998 FIFA World Cup. In five seasons with Monaco, the teenage winger scored 20 league goals in 105 appearances.

Henry departed Monaco in January 1999 for £10.5 million to join Juventus, one year before his best friend David Trezeguet. He played wing, wing back, and wide midfield, although he only scored three goals in 16 appearances due to Serie A opponents’ defensive discipline. Henry told Jamie Carragher’s podcast The Greatest Game in 2019 that he left Juve over a dispute with Luciano Moggi.
