We are keeping his family in our prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.

Like many others in the musicology, country music studies, and bluegrass worlds, I have been struggling today to process the news that Travis Stimeling has passed away. I knew Travis for close to twenty years, collaborated with them on numerous projects and events, and counted them among my dearest friends. Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever met someone else who combined such a brilliant mind with such an enormous heart. Travis was truly selfless, infinitely generous, continually supportive, and always thought of other people first no matter what they themselves might have been going through.

Travis Stimeling left behind a remarkable legacy characterized by love, empathy, and unwavering dedication. His actions alone showed how one person’s actions might positively impact an entire community; even now, individuals whose paths intersected with him are still guided by his influence, which serves as a constant reminder of kindness, empathy, community support, and other important values.

We wish Travis Stimeling’s family and friends our sincere condolences during this difficult time. May the solace that comes from the treasured recollections of his life and the lasting influence of his kindness act as an example for all of us. Who was Travis Stimeling?

Travis D. Stimeling was a professor of musicology and the director of the bluegrass and old-time bands at West Virginia University. renowned for his skill in both commercial country and traditional Appalachian music,

Among his several published works, Stimeling’s most recent book, “Nashville Cats: Record Production in Music City,” was released by Oxford University Press in 2020.

His other books, “The Opioid Epidemic and U.S. Culture: Expression, Art, and Politics in an Age of Addiction” (West Virginia University Press, 2020) and “Songwriting in Contemporary West Virginia: Profiles and Reflections” (West Virginia University Press, 2018), are also notable.
