How Did George R. R. Martin Become Famous?

Martin, a resident of Bayonne, New Jersey, came from modest beginnings.

“We didn’t have much money; my father was a longshoreman, and my mother, when I was older, worked in a factory in Bayonne, the Maidenform factory,” he recalled to New Jersey Monthly. “I had two younger sisters. We lived in federal housing projects down on First Street. I went to school on Fifth Street, and that was pretty much my world, from First Street to Fifth Street, except in my imagination because I was a voracious reader of books and science fiction books and fantasy books, and all of that stuff.”

When he was a young boy, he began creating stories about monsters for other kids in exchange for small money. By high school, he had developed an interest in comic books, particularly Stan Lee’s work with Marvel. He also won a fan writing competition and had his fan letter published in a Fantastic Four issue.

He graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in journalism, and he published his first professionally written science fiction short tale in 1971. Martin made ends meet by working as a professor at Clarke University and working at chess competitions in addition to being a writer.

Following the death of his close friend Tom Reamy in 1979, Martin moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to devote himself full-time to his writing career, specializing in horror and science fiction.

His first film adaptation was of his 1980 novella Nightflyers, for which he co-wrote the script and which was released in 1987. Although he wasn’t entirely satisfied with the outcome (the storyline was partly altered for financial reasons), he has since acknowledged that the film helped him save his writing career.

Following the book The Armageddon Rag’s 1983 financial setback, Martin contemplated joining the Haviland Tuf adventure book team. But before he had the chance, he received an invitation to write for the television shows Max Headroom and Beauty and the Beast, then a revival of the Twilight Zone. Martin resumed writing novels in the 1990s, and his debut Game of Thrones book, A Song of Ice and Fire, was released in August 1996.
