Herbert Edward Arthur Hines and Eva Lillian Hines (née Bassett) welcomed Brian Frederick Hines into the world on October 29, 1944, in the Channel Islands. He was raised in Tyseley, Birmingham, England, and went to Yardley Grammar School there.
As a young lad, he picked up the guitar because of Django Reinhardt, a gypsy jazz artist. At the age of twelve, he performed for the first time on his own. He then started his professional music career by leading Denny Laine and the Diplomats, which featured Bev Bevan, who would go on to become the drummer for the Move and Electric Light Orchestra.
Laine took the last name of his sister’s favorite singer, Frankie Laine, after deciding that “Brian Frederick Hines and the Diplomats… wouldn’t work.” The fact that “everyone had a backyard and a den to hang out” at the time gave rise to the first name, Denny.
