In 1958, Glock wed Helga Glock and the two of them jointly established the family company in 1963. Following their 2011 divorce, they went to court on claims that Glock had committed racketeering. In 2017, the lawsuit was thrown out.

In the 1960s, Glock began his career as a manufacturer of curtain rods. In the 1970s, he started producing knives for the Austrian military. However, it wasn’t until he was 52 years old that he designed and manufactured a pistol.
By virtue of his previous commercial endeavors, he already possessed prior knowledge of working with polymers. In 1980, he purchased injection-molding equipment in his garage workshop in order to create handles and sheaths for the field knives that he was producing for the Austrian army.
The first people he hired had prior knowledge of the production of polymer components and came from the manufacturing of cameras. The Glock 17 was his first pistol to be offered for production.
