Al Green is an American gospel and soul singer. “The Last of the Great Soul Singers,” as Green is known, amassed his wealth from his hit songs in the 1970s, including “Take Me to the River,” “Let’s Stay Together,” “I’m Still in Love with You,” “You Ought to Be with Me,” and “Love and Happiness.”
Al Green was called “one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music” when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has sold over 20 million records, and in 2004 and 2010, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #65 on their “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list and #14 on their “100 Greatest Singers” list.
In 2000, Green published his memoir, “Take Me to the River,” and in 1976, he was ordained as a pastor. In 2002, Green was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Al Green Early Life
On April 13, 1946, Albert Leornes Greene was born in Forrest City, Arkansas, and became known as Al Green. Along with his nine siblings, his sharecropper father Robert Jr. and mother Cora Lee raised him. The Greene siblings were a singing group that Al and his siblings started when he was ten years old.
The family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the late 1950s, and when Green was a teenager, his father threw him out of the house to listen to soul artist Jackie Wilson’s songs. Al started using drugs and moved in with his prostitute girlfriend.
As a high school student, Green founded the vocal group Al Greene & the Creations, and its members Palmer James and Curtis Rodgers started their own indie record company, Hot Line Music Journal. Al Greene & the Soul Mates, the group recorded “Back Up Train” in 1968 and put the song on Hot Line.
According to the “Cash Box” Top 100 chart, “Back Up Train” peaked at #46. Al got to know Memphis record producer Willie Mitchell while on stage with the group, and they later sang together in a 1969 Texas gig with Mitchell’s band. Subsequently, Green joined Hi Records, Mitchell’s record company.
Al Green Personal Life
Mary Woodson, Al’s girlfriend, attacked him at his Memphis home in 1974. Disappointed that Green would not wed her (even though she was already married), Woodson hurled scorching grits in his direction, resulting in second-degree burns. Mary then shot herself with Al’s gun and committed suicide.
Following the sad incident, Green decided to turn his life around. In 1976, he founded the Full Gospel Tabernacle church in Memphis, where Al has been preaching and singing ever since.
On June 15, 1977, Green wed Shirley Kyles. Before divorcing in 1983, the couple produced three daughters: Alva, Rubi, and Kora. Shirley testified that Green beat her with a boot when she was five months pregnant, leaving a head wound that needed stitches. Shirley claimed that Al mistreated her during their marriage.
Al is the father of Trevor and Al Jr., two sons, and Kala, a daughter, in addition to the children he shared with Shirley. Former Green’s assistant Linda Wills filed a $100,000 lawsuit against him in 1974, claiming that the singer had shoved her through a glass door and attacked her.
Al was taken into custody in 1978 on charges of assault and battery after it was reported that he had struck Lovie Smith, a woman from Memphis, with a tree limb until she passed out. Smith moved and was unable to get a subpoena, which resulted in her missing the court date. As a result, the charges were dropped the next year.
Al Green Awards and Honors
After receiving 21 Grammy nominations, Green took home 11 awards in the pop, R&B, and soul gospel categories. The Grammy Hall of Fame inducted “Let’s Stay Together” in 1999, and “Take Me to the River” in 2011.

Al has received inductions into four halls of fame: the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2004), the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame (2009), the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2004), and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1995). 2014 saw Green get a Kennedy Center Honors, and in 2004 he was named a BMI Icon at the BMI Urban Awards.
