Reality Check: The Bachelorette’s Rachel Lindsay and Bryan Abasolo’s Shocking Divorce News

After four years of marriage, Rachel Lindsay and Bryan Abasolo—who got engaged on her season of The Bachelorette—are getting divorced.

According to CNN and other media reports, Abasolo filed for divorce in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jan 2, 2024, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, who met while filming Season 13 of the ABC dating show, which aired in 2017, do not have any children.

“After more than 4 years of marriage, Rachel and I have made the difficult decision to part ways and start anew,” Abasolo wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “My parents have been married forever and I’m a family man, but sometimes loving yourself and your partner means you must let go.”

Lindsay said on Instagram over the New Year’s Day weekend, prior to Tuesday’s filing, “Definitely one of the hardest years of my life, but choosing to focus on grateful moments and carrying that energy into 2024.”

She was originally introduced to the Bachelor franchise as a contestant on Nick Viall’s season 21 of The Bachelor, which aired in 2017, with the Dallas attorney finishing third. Lindsay accepted Abasolo’s marriage proposal during her season finale that year, becoming her first Black lead on The Bachelorette. The couple married in August of this year.

Lindsay left The Bachelorette to pursue a career in the media. She hosted the ABC franchise’s Bachelor Happy Hour podcast for 100 episodes before announcing her departure in 2021. This came after her criticism of how producers handled season 25 of The Bachelor, which featured Matt James as the show’s first Black protagonist.

In recent years, The Bachelorette has struggled to find long-term success for its pairings. Every lead couple on The Bachelorette since JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers, who tied the knot in 2022, separated from the season’s victor. The only exceptions are Charity Lawson and Dotun Olubeko, who announced their engagement on the August 20th season 20 finale.
