What was the reality of Priscilla and Elvis’s marriage?
From spotting his girl at a party on her journey to moving her to the US, Priscilla and Elvis had a great start to their relationship. They were tabloids and fans’ favourite couple and everyone kept wondering what’s the next move for them. Elvis proposed to Priscilla with a 3 1/2 -carat diamond circled with over 20 diamonds exclusively designed by Jeweler Harry Levitch. The couple eloped to Las Vegas and married on 1st May 1967 in an 8-minutes long wedding. Later a grand celebration happened in Graceland.
When Priscilla opened up to Vogue about this, she said, “My wedding was very unusual,” “It was the people closest to us, and private, and that’s how we wanted it. We didn’t want a fan club. We didn’t want a circus.”
This was the marriage she wanted, staying with the man who is her everything. But still, something was missing. The couple had their daughter Lisa Marie Presley and Elvis was undoubtedly a doting father. However, he didn’t help Priscilla with anything like changing diapers or helping her to make the baby sleep. He didn’t consider these to be a man’s job. Though she claimed to have had a good life with him and “I loved taking care of Elvis very much. I loved tending to him. I loved feeding him. We would baby talk because you have to have your own language when you have that many people around. It was a good life. It was different, but it was ours.”
