Gunther VI is a German Shepherd With a Net Worth of $690 Million

The world’s wealthiest canine just became even wealthier. A trust gave a nine-bedroom, eight-and-a-half-bath Miami estate where Madonna once lived to a German Shepherd named Gunther VI.

Gunther VI was a very lucky dog. Gunther inherited the waterfront home, and after putting it on the market for a whopping $31.75 million in November, it has now sold for $29 million.

German Countess Karlotta Leibenstein, who died in 1992, left her entire $80 million fortune to her beloved dog, Gunther III, Gunther VI’s grandfather. She didn’t have any children or close relatives, so she left all of her money to Gunther III.

The people who run the dog’s estate have saved up about $500 million and bought mansions and villas all over the world with Gunther’s money. Gunther put his Miami mansion up for sale in the hands of real estate agent Ruthie Assouline of The Assouline Team at Compass.

“We have sold countless multimillion-dollar homes but this one is definitely a first,” Ruthie told PEOPLE when the home first went on the market. “When the handlers initially told me a dog owned the property, I didn’t believe it.”

Ruthie, who was co-listing it with Ethan Assouline, had to go through a tough sniff test before Gunther gave him the bark of approval. “During our first meeting with Gunther, he ran up to me and gave me a huge slobbery kiss and licked off my lipstick,” she said. “I think that is what really sealed the deal!”

The private estate is on a 51,000-square-foot piece of land that is 100 feet from the water. It has a lot of landscaping, views of both the water and the city, a pool, a fountain, and a dock, where Gunther liked to soak up the sun when he came to Miami from Italy, where he lives full time.

Gunther had plenty of room to move around in his 8,400-square-foot home, but he liked to spend most of his time in Madonna’s old bedroom.

“He sleeps in a custom-created round Italian red velvet bed on the floor of Madonna’s old bedroom,” a source told PEOPLE. “Gunther lives the good life!”

“This property has a history that no one else can claim,” said Ruthie. “In addition, the ultra-private gated estate sits on an expansive lot lined with stunning Royal Palm trees surrounded by lush landscaping and breathtaking open bay views.”

The Gunther Corporation is in charge of Gunther’s money. It was set up to make sure the dog is taken care of. The German Shepherd got the Miami estate and most of his money from his grandfather, Gunther IV, the second dog in the lineage.

Gunther IV bought the home from Madonna 20 years ago. Ruthie noticed that there is a picture of Gunther IV over the fireplace. When a pet owner leaves an inheritance to a dog or other animal, the money is usually put into a trust, and a human trustee is named to decide how the money should be spent.

The pet has a caretaker, who gets money on a regular basis to take care of it. Gunther’s caretakers own other businesses and have put money into scientific research on his behalf. They even started Gunther Rescue to help animals who were in trouble.
