Rally racer and DC Shoes co-founder Ken Block passed away on Monday after a snowmobile accident in Utah’s Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. He was 55. The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said that Block was riding a snowmobile up a steep hill in the Mill Hollow area when the machine tipped over and fell on top of him.
He was allegedly part of a larger group traveling together but was on his own when the crash occurred. A medical examiner ruled Block deceased on the spot. The official cause of death will be decided by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. “It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident,” Block’s Hoonigan Racing Division said in a statement. “Ken was a visionary, a pioneer, and an icon. And most importantly, a father and a husband. He will be incredibly missed.”
Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Josh Probst reported no evidence of high-marking, the practice by which snowmobilers attempt to ride up and down a steep hill without becoming trapped or turning over.
Even though Probst wanted to wait to learn more about the accident report, he did want to make sure his cautions regarding snowmobiling after a storm were heard and heeded. “The deep powder can play a factor,” Probst said. “With machines these days, they’re very powerful. And deep powder like that, it’s very possible to overturn a sled or have one upend, as it did in this situation.”
