There is nothing unholy about this victory: Kim Petras has successfully made history at the Grammy Awards. Petras made history by becoming the first openly transgender woman singer to win a Grammy when she took home the award for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” in 2023 for her collaboration with Sam Smith on the smash track “Unholy.”
When she was presenting her acceptance speech for the award on Sunday, she stated, “This song has been such an unbelievable, incredible journey for me.” Petras called Smith out for the fact that she had been a supporter of hers for such a long time.

In point of fact, Smith wanted Petras to be the only person to speak on stage because of her historic turn, which was met with applause from Smith and a standing ovation from the audience. Petras’s turn merited both of these reactions.

In her statement on Sunday, Petras also mentioned the LGBTQ icon and pop music queen Madonna (Instagram). She thanked Madonna for her advocacy for LGBTQ rights, saying, “I don’t think I could be here without Madonna.” She also thanked Madonna for her support of the LGBTQ community. Later on in the evening, Madonna presented the band to the audience before they began their ferocious performance of “Unholy.”
Petras, who grew up in what she refers to as “nowhere Germany,” expressed her gratitude to her mother during another moving scene.
She remarked,
“My mother believed me that I was a girl, and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support.” “My mother believed me that I was a girl.”
Petras received a nomination for the Grammys for the first time, while Smith received his fifth Grammy award. In 2022, “Unholy” was an enormous commercial success. It was the first song from either singer to reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and it became Smith’s most successful single after their 2014 hit “Stay with Me.” The song debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, but it eventually climbed all the way to No. 1 in its fourth week.
