Netflix’s “Good Times” Reboot Hit by Criticism for Using Old Stereotypes
A newly shown scene from Netflix’s remake of “Good Times,” a famous sitcom from the 1970s, has gotten a lot of negative attention. Viewers are upset because they feel the show uses old and offensive stereotypes.
The scene that caused this commotion is when the father character sings the show’s well-known theme song in the shower with a roach for company.
We believe putting a roach in a scene that was supposed to feel nostalgic and warm ends up bringing back a harmful stereotype about Black households and cleanliness. People had high hopes that the reboot would respectfully update the original series, which was pioneering in its depiction of the life and laughter of a Black family in a Chicago housing project.
Adding to the concerns, Seth MacFarlane, known for creating “Family Guy,” is involved with the show. We believe that his kind of humor, which often leans on stereotypes and shock for laughs, won’t be the right fit for the thoughtful and respectful tribute that “Good Times” deserves. Furthermore, MacFarlane’s comedic style might overshadow the deeper and more respectful messages that made the original show so loved.
Disappointment isn’t just about specific scenes. It’s about the show not seeming to bring its story and characters into the present day meaningfully.
Instead of offering fresh perspectives or looking at current society, the reboot seems to fall back on old stereotypes, ignoring the progress made since the original show aired in the late 1970s.
We were looking for stories that go beyond simple stereotypes, hoping for narratives that show the depth and beauty of Black family life without dipping into negative images.
