Canadian-born actor, comedian, writer, and producer Martin Short is now a naturalized American citizen. Although Short born in Ontario, Canada, first planned to use his bachelor’s degree in social work to launch a career in social work, he was cast in his first play after his talent as an actor was seen.
His primary occupation until his relocation to New York was that of a television and radio actor and comedian. Martin Short was already well-known in the United States as a comedian before landing a role on Saturday Night Live’s smash hit. Shortly after, he quickly went on to host his massively popular talk and comedy shows.
Short realized early on that he had the potential to become an accomplished actor; his film credits include “Three Amigos,” “Innerspace,” and two “Father of the Bride” installments.

Martin Short Early Years and Family
On March 26, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, Short was born to Olive Grace (1913–1968), a concertmistress, and Charles Patrick Short (1909–1970), an executive of the Canadian steel company Stelco. Most of his upbringing was spent in a Catholic household with his brothers. His older siblings included David (who has since passed away), Michael, Brian and Nora.

The paternal line of Short’s family emigrated to North America from Crossmaglen, South Armagh, Ireland, a primarily Catholic area, during the Irish War of Independence. Short’s mother had both English and Irish roots.
Initially, she encouraged his artistic endeavors. Short lost his older brother, David, in a car accident in Montréal in 1962 when he was 12 years old. His mother passed away from cancer in 1968, and his father passed away from stroke-related complications the following year.
Martin Short Professional Life and Accomplishments
After completing his studies at McMaster University, Short planned to engage in social work; however, after being cast in the Toronto production of Godspell, he changed his mind and decided to pursue a career in acting instead.
In addition to Paul Shaffer’s direction as musical director, the cast included Victor Garber, Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and Andrea Martin. In the documentary Love, Gilda, Short admitted that he and Gilda Radner dated on and off throughout that time.

After that, he was included in various productions, such as the dramatic series Fortune and the play Men’s Eyes (1972). As of 1979, he has solely done work in Canada. American sitcom The Associates followed a group of young, inexperienced lawyers working on Wall Street, and Short appeared in the show in 1979.
He started working on the set of the 1980s sitcom I’m a Big Girl Now, starring Diana Canova and Danny Thomas. In large part because of her portrayal as Corinne Tate Flotsky on ABC’s Soap, Canova was approached for the part. When Short’s new wife Nancy Dolman was cast, she abruptly departed Soap.
Martin Short Honors and Nominations
Martin Short’s career spans decades, and that fact has not gone unnoticed by the award industry. Short has earned two of his twelve Primetime Emmy nominations and was the host of the variety special “AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks” in 2014.
His nomination for his appearance on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” is the most recent in his career. He has been nominated for several awards for his role on the TV series “Only Murders in the Building,” including the Golden Globe, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Critics’ Choice Award.
Throughout his Broadway career, Short has received many Tony Award nominations and, in 1999, won the award for his performance as the title character in the musical “Little Me.”
Family History of Martin Short
Bob Dolman, his brother-in-law, is an Emmy-winning screenwriter. He was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her death in 2010, and they had three children: Katherine, Henry, and Oliver. He had dated comedian Gilda Radner before he wed.

Is Martin Short Gay or Straight?
Whenever it is revealed that a public figure is currently single, speculation often turns to the possibility that they are gay. The opposite is true. Despite his long history of singlehood, Martin is nonetheless beautiful to females.
Martin does not identify as a homosexual and is sexually straight. Martin had been married before. His stunning wife was the Canadian singer and actress Nancy Dolman. They tied the knot in their thirties in 1980.
