Store Employee’s Murder Investigated by Upper Sandusky Police, Suspect in Jail

A doctoral student at Washington State University, a 28-year-old Pullman resident, was detained on Friday, according to a press release from the Moscow Police Department. The student was wanted in connection with the November 13 deaths of four University of Idaho students.

Pennsylvania State Police officers arrested Bryan Christopher Kohberger on four charges of first-degree murder and a criminal burglary charge early on a Friday morning in Chestnuthill Township, Pennsylvania. An arrest warrant issued by the Idaho State Police led to his capture.

Kohberger is under suspicion for the early morning stabbing murders of Xana Kerndodle, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, and Madison Mogen on November 13 at their King Road home in Moscow. At a press conference on Friday afternoon in Moscow, Moscow Police Chief James Fry and Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding Kohberger’s arrest in Pennsylvania, his motivation, or his link to the victims.

The court’s probable cause affidavit contains much of this material, but Thompson said it can’t be disclosed until Kohberger is in Latah County and has been served with the Idaho arrest warrant. After weeks of appealing for leads regarding the vehicle police suspect was near the King Road crime scene at the time of the killings, the agency did reveal that a white 2015 Hyundai Elantra had been discovered.

The murder weapon still missing, according to Fry. According to Thompson, Kohberger has already had his first court appearance in Pennsylvania, where he is being detained without bond. On Tuesday afternoon, he must return to a courtroom in Pennsylvania. If Kohberger chooses to return to Idaho willingly, he can avoid extradition. Latah County can request extradition through the governor’s office if he does not waive it.

“If we do that, it can take a while for him to get here so, again, I’m asking for your patience and understand that’s just the way the system works,” Thompson said. Fry and Thompson both urged the public to keep sending in reports to law enforcement with any information they may have regarding Kohberger.

“We are still looking for more information,” Fry said. “We’re still trying to build that picture just like we have stated all along. We’re putting all the pieces together and that will help.” Fry claimed that the court’s order to stop the cleaning of the King Road property has prevented the private firm from proceeding with the cleaning.

WSU issued a statement on Friday stating that Kohberger’s office and residence, both of which are situated on the WSU campus in Pullman, had been searched by the WSU Police Department in accordance with a search warrant. WSU announced earlier this month that Kohberger had finished his first semester as a Ph.D. student in the criminal justice department there.

Fry expressed gratitude to the FBI and the Idaho State Police who assisted his agency in the investigation. To the media he expressed his appreciation for keeping the inquiry in the public eye, and to the inhabitants of the county, he expressed his gratitude for the over 19,000 tips they had provided.

Nearly seven weeks have passed since the killings, and throughout that time authorities have limited the amount of material disclosed to the public to prevent tipping off the culprit and endangering an upcoming criminal prosecution. “I will 100% stand behind the way that we handled this investigation,” Fry said Friday.

Fry said he feels comfortable living in the Moscow area, but that residents should still exercise caution. At the press conference, UI President Scott Green expressed relief at the arrest. According to him, there has been a groundswell of popular backing during the past several weeks.

“Kindness is contagious,” he said. “And it provided the light that reclaimed ground lost to evil and darkness.” Green notified UI students and staff via email that Kohberger could not be located in the university’s database. He also mentioned that the UI has increased its security staff and that local law enforcement would step up patrols on campus and in the surrounding areas.

Self-defense courses, vigilance training, stalker awareness seminars, seminars on maintaining healthy relationships, and the distribution of other personal safety items will go as scheduled. Moscow’s mayor, Art Bettge, issued a statement praising the work of law enforcement across. Better hope that the revelation of the suspect’s arrest today will help people get closer to understanding what led up to the awful deed.
