In recognition of his performance in The Whale, Brendan Fraser took home the Best Actor prize at the Critics’ Choice Awards. He also gave one of the evening’s most moving speeches.
Fraser began to sob as his name was called as the winner, and when he mounted the stage, he quoted Herman Melville as having “once said that there are only five critics in America, the rest are asleep.”
The actor claimed he had no idea what that actually meant but yet expressed his gratitude that “the critics woke up for me.” The Whale is a love story and a story of redemption, he continued. I feel very fortunate to have worked with such an amazing ensemble.
It’s about finding the light in a dark place. Fraser continued to thank his co-stars, mentioning Hong Chau and joking that she “should have her own movie based on every character she’s ever portrayed.”
A special mention was made for Sadie Sink as well, who was called “amazing.” Ty Simpkins, according to Fraser, “won the game ball every day,” and Sam Hunter was his “lighthouse.” I was in the woods, and I probably ought to have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you found me,” he said.
And just like the best directors, you just pointed out the route I needed to take to get there. As he said in his closing remarks, “If you, like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, in any way, suffer with obesity, or you just feel like you’re in a dark sea.
I want you to be aware of the possibility that you, too, may find the willpower to just stand up and go toward the light. The future is promising. The actor explained in a backstage interview that making the movie was “an act of faith” and that the prize meant “more than I know how to express with words.”
Every single person who worked on this project did so with the mindset that it was our one and only opportunity to do something of this nature. This movie, in my opinion, has a lot of potential to be beneficial.
