According to a sizzle reel released by HBO Max, new episodes of Our Flag Means Death will start airing in 2023. That may not be a big surprise, since the season started filming earlier this year.
However, with shows like Invincible taking long breaks and the future of HBO Max a bit uncertain, fans of the beloved pirate show are happy about the news, even though there aren’t many details to get excited about.
In the early 18th century, spoiled aristocrat Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), who is also the show’s executive producer and star, gives up his life of luxury to become a pirate. The show is based on his interactions with the famous pirate Blackbeard, played by Waititi.

The show was loosely based on the real-life story of Bonnett. At first, it got good ratings, but as it went on, it became more and more popular. The “gay pirates show,” in which Bonnett and Blackbeard eventually fell in love, became a social media sensation. Like Peacemaker, it went against conventional wisdom by having a lot more viewers at the end of the season than at the beginning.

When the second season was announced in June, the show’s creator, David Jenkins, said,
“We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet,” “Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible.”

“After trading in the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Waititi. To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas… they found love. Now they have to survive it.”
