In an Instagram post, the “Peaches” singer defended Frank Ocean and gave the controversial Coachella performance high marks. Along with Bad Bunny and Blackpink, Ocean was the headlining act for Coachella 2023, but his April 16 performance was a huge letdown for fans because he started an hour late, skipped through a lot of their favorite songs, largely played sitting down with his back to the audience, and lip-synced to numerous songs.

Additionally, he performed after Coachella’s curfew had passed and concluded his show early after less than 90 minutes. While Ocean’s performance drew criticism, Bieber had nothing but praise for his bandmate. Bieber, who famously joined Ariana Granda for her headlining performance at Coachella in 2019, commended Ocean’s artistry and voice in a touching post on social media.

Justin Bieber shared a post on Instagram with the caption: “I was blown away by Frank Ocean’s Coachella performance,” Bieber wrote. “His artistry is simply unmatched, his style, his taste, his voice, his attention to detail…I was deeply moved. It made me want to keep going and get better as an artist. He continues to set the bar high and gave me a night I will never forget! Thanks, Frank.”

Variety received confirmation from sources that Ocean’s performance had undergone a significant alteration in the hours before it began, which may explain why the set seemed so disjointed. Ice skaters who would apparently skate around Ocean and the band during their set were to be part of an elaborate stage production that involved an ice rink.

The skaters had been practicing for several days and were prepared to go when Ocean allegedly called it all off on Sunday afternoon, just hours before the band was scheduled to take the stage.

According to TMZ and Rolling Stone reports, Ocean’s set “was adjusted at the last minute to account for an ankle injury the singer sustained during on-site rehearsals in the week leading up to the festival,” which may be the reason why Ocean spent a large portion of his performance seated. Ocean will still perform on April 23 to cap off Coachella’s second weekend as of right now.
