“Never Have I Ever” Will Be Back for Season 5 or Is It the Final Goodbye?

Critics and viewers have showered praise on the raucous high school comedy series “Never Have I Ever,” centered around the different coming-of-age journey of Devi, an Indian-American teenager.

The show has garnered acclaim for its detailed and humorous portrayal of life in a Hindu household and its realistic depiction of the diverse and occasionally challenging high school experience.

Season 4, premiered on Netflix recently, marks the end of Devi Vishwakumar’s eventful high school years and her ongoing streak of impulsive decisions. However, many fans may be left curious about what lies ahead for Devi and her friends as they transition to college.

Unfortunately, it’s disheartening news for fans as the show will not continue with Season 5, as it was always intended to conclude after four seasons. Nevertheless, viewers can enjoy Season 4 on Netflix, providing a satisfying conclusion to Devi’s story.

Netflix’s Confirmation of Season 4 as the Final Season

Season 4 of “Never Have I Ever,” which came out on Netflix on June 8, is the end of the story of Devi Vishwakumar’s high school years and her never-ending string of bad, rash decisions:

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is back as Devi, Poorna Jagannathan is back as her mother, Nalini, Darren Barnet is back as Paxton, Jaren Lewison is back as Ben, Ramona Young is back as Eleanor, Lee Rodrigues is back as Fabiola, Richa Moorjani is back as Kamala and tennis star John McEnroe are back as the narrator of Devi’s misadventures.

Still, some fans might be curious about what happens after the graduation caps are thrown, and the new college freshmen move into their dorms. Some people will be sad to hear that there won’t be a Season 5 of the popular show about growing up.

Netflix had already said in March 2022 that “Never Have I Ever” would be revived for a fourth and final season.

Will Never Have I Ever Have a fifth season?

“Never Have I Ever” will not have a fifth season, and according to the people who make the show, Devi’s story was always meant to end after four years.

This was because the show is set in a high school, and each season corresponds to a school year. Also, the actors were getting too old for their parts (Darren Barnet was 29 when the show started and is now 32).

Mindy Kaling, who made the show, talked to Entertainment Tonight last year about why ending it after four seasons made sense:

“Four seasons for a high school show felt like it made sense. They can’t be in high school forever. We’ve seen those shows. Like, you’ve been in high school for 12 years. What is going on here? Also, the actors get older, and it starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old.”

Love Dilemma: Devi’s Difficult Choice Among Ben, Paxton, and Ethan

In Season 4, Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) goes through some last senior year shenanigans, like having her car broken into, getting lost on a tour of Princeton, and getting in a car accident on the way to prom in a cab.

Devi will have to choose between her rival-turned-lover Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison), her lifelong crush Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet), and the new bad boy Ethan (Michael Cimino) in her love life.

Even though the Season 4 finale wraps up Devi’s story in a friendly way, some fans still want to know more about her friends and family:

The Potential for a Spin-Off as Devi’s Friends Enter the Next Chapter

As her three best friends—Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez), Eleanor (Ramona Young), and Aneesa (Megan Suri)—start their lives after high school, a spin-off show might make sense. Kaling hasn’t said that she doesn’t want to do a spin-off.

When asked which character she’d like to learn more about in a possible spin-off, Kaling chose Trent (Benjamin Norris), Paxton’s best friend and Eleanor’s puppy dog boyfriend. Kalin explained:

“Honestly, he’s so funny to me. He really makes me laugh, so finding out more about Trent and seeing what his haircare routine is every morning. I would definitely watch that show. I’d definitely like to write that show.”
