Newman passed away on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2023. When Brian DeQuincey Newman passed away, he was 40 years old. Friends claim that a blood clot in the heart was to blame.

The Rev. I. DeQuincey Newman’s great-nephew, Brian, was the youngest person ever to be elected to the Columbia City Council. He also led the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority’s board of directors and worked as an assistant solicitor for the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Before his untimely demise, he was working on Atlanta’s growth, according to his friend and former council colleague Tameika Isaac Devine. He was loving every moment of life as he lived it on his terms.

“Brian was an amazing young man. He was very caring, very smart, had an amazing smile, and could really light up a room,” Devine said.

Newman’s legacy, according to Devine, goes far beyond his professional achievements.

“He had so many opportunities, was so bright, and didn’t limit himself to one area or another but just looked at where he could give back,” Devine said.

A personal friend of mine, State Representative Todd Rutherford, likewise respected that selfless, caring nature.

“He was the kind of person that if he met you, you were his friend, and if you were his friend, you were his family, and that’s how he treated everybody,” Rutherford said.

He wants Newman’s passing to serve as a reminder that tomorrow is never guaranteed.

“One of the most common things I remember Brian saying was ‘YOLO’ [You Only Live Once]. He lived every day like it was his last, and he believed that you should as well,” said Rutherford with a smile.

Newman came from the well-known Newman family. He was the grand-nephew of the late state senator and well-known South Carolina civil rights activist, I. DeQuincey Newman. He is commemorated at the I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church.
