What Was Katie Richards’ Cause of Death?
Katie Richards, the Director of Student Success and Disability Services at Mayville State University, died in a car accident on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
Her vehicle swerved, flipped, and went through a T-intersection. The accident happened about eight miles west of Reynolds, North Dakota, at the junction of Eagle Avenue and Grand Forks County 25.
The incident left a gap in academia that would be difficult to fill and sent shockwaves throughout the academic community. The incident clearly resulted in major injuries that proved fatal.

Katie Richards’s Career: What Did She Do?
Katie J. Richards, M.Ed., of Mayville State University was more than just a coworker. She was a friend, mentor, and counselor to many students. In her work as Director of Kid Success and Disability Services, she dedicated her life to ensuring that every child received the tools and support they needed to succeed.
Richards was a trailblazer more than ten years ago when she was appointed as an assistant and became one of North Dakota’s first female basketball coaches. She said that a males squad would be a better fit for her personality at the time.
She also coached high school and kindergarten teams. Katie gained many people’s hearts throughout her time at the university because of her warmth, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her pupils, as well as her love of basketball.
Katie, a former UND women’s basketball player, was an important member of the team that helped the school win national championships. Her exceptional ability, great work ethic, and leadership on the court were critical to those incredible victories.
Katie’s achievements as a student-athlete will live on in the annals of UND sports history. Katie was a shining example of her dedication to the welfare of her students while serving as Director of Student Success and Disability Services at Mayville State University.
She was a role model for many, a staunch advocate for accessibility and equality, and she made incalculable contributions to the university.
