After playing for El Camino College from 1983 to 1985, Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. had a brief football career. After a brief career as an undrafted NFL player, he began working as a concert promoter and bodyguard for superstars such as Bobby Brown.
In 1989, Knight established his own music publishing company, making his first significant profit when Vanilla Ice agreed to hand over his earnings from the song “Ice Ice Baby.” The arrangement was also reached since it was claimed that the song was composed by one of Knight’s clients, Mario Johnson. Knight later founded a management business and signed musicians such as the D.O.C. and DJ Quik.
Through the two, Knight met Dr. Dre, who co-founded Death Row Records with him and the D.O.C. Dre’s solo album The Chronic went triple platinum, propelling the label to success.
In 1995, Knight launched his dispute with Sean “Diddy” Combs, openly criticizing the fellow entrepreneur’s techniques of appearing in his musicians’ music videos. That same year, Knight paid $1.4 million to release Tupac Shakur out of jail on the condition that he sign with Death Row.
Shakur went to the studio after his release and began working on All Eyez on Me. While on Death Row, the rapper rose to prominence, releasing successful albums such as The Don and Killuminati: The 7-Day Theory. Suge Knight had a talent for spotting talent, but he was harsh in his approach. In the late 1990s, Knight was imprisoned for assault, parole, and probation violations. However, it appears that the music magnate did not learn from his time in prison.
Knight drove over businessman Terry Carter with his pickup vehicle in 2015. In the same event, Knight seriously assaulted Cle Sloan, a former Compton gang member, because he thought they were utilizing his likeness in the film Straight Outta Compton.
When Knight approached the crew, things became heated. According to NBC News, Sloan attempted to confront Knight, but the Death Row Records executive smashed Sloan’s ankles with his truck before fatally mowing down Carter, who had attempted to flee.

Following many health difficulties, a judge convicted Knight guilty of willful manslaughter and sentenced him to 28 years in jail in 2018. The first 22 years were for running over Carter, and the extra six were for the crime being the former hip-hop executive’s third strike.
Suge Knight is now completing his sentence at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California, and will be available for release in 2034.

Suge Knight’s life rights were allegedly sold to reality TV personality Ray J in 2020, but Knight denied the claims. However, Deadline claimed in 2021 that Knight was working on a biography about himself alongside Steve Whitney, Anthony Thorne, and Nick Cassavetes to “tell the truth.”
It’s unclear how much Knight stands to benefit from the transaction, but it could boost his fortune, which is a shell of what it once was. In his prime, he was worth $100 million. Suge Knight’s net worth today is believed to be $200,000 due to his legal problems and bad money management.
