When they were both working at the Voyage restaurant in New York City, the couple fell in love. They were accompanied by their twin children, Florence and Theodore, and they resided on the family homestead that Howard owned in Deep Run, North Carolina.

Vivienne Howard’s Career
Howard graduated from NYC’s Institute of Culinary Education in 2004. She interned at Wylie Dufresne’s wd~50 and trained as Chef de Partie at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Spice Market.
Howard married Voyage coworker Ben Knight and established a soup delivery service in their Harlem apartment, freezing soup in the bathtub. Instead of opening a New York restaurant, the couple accepted Howard’s parents’ offer to buy a Kinston restaurant.
Chef & the Farmer debuted in 2006 in a downtown print shop and mule stable after Howard and Knight moved to North Carolina in 2005. Over 60% of the restaurant’s ingredients are nearly 90 miles away.
Her family’s Eastern North Carolina community inspires the restaurant’s sophisticated southern meals. Howard said in 2018, “Our elders taught me simple things. I appreciate A Chef’s Life but despise modern media since it’s young-person, new-ideas driven, and doesn’t use older people’s wisdom. Learning from and sharing with them is great.”
The Chef & the Farmer burned down in 2012 and was rebuilt. Chef & the Farmer closed in the summer of 2022 to relaunch with a new concept. The Boiler Room, built by Howard and Knight in 2013, offered oysters and burgers across from Chef & the Farmer until May 2020.
October 2016 saw the publication of Howard’s cookbook and memoir Deep Run Roots – Stories and Recipes from my Corner of the South ISBN 0316381101. The book was a New York Times bestseller for 3 weeks.
The book earned four IACP Cookbook Awards in 2017: Cookbook of the Year, Julia Child First Book Award, Outstanding Restaurant Cookbook, and Outstanding General Cookbook.
On December 12, 2017, Howard and Knight debuted Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria in Wilmington’s Warehouse District. Howard’s second cookbook, This Will Make It Taste Good: A New Path to Simple Cooking, was published in 2020.
Flavorful bases form the cookbook’s foundation for subsequent dishes. She started writing a Garden & Gun column in the South. A companion café, Handy + Hot, joined Howard’s first Charleston restaurant, Lenoir, in 2021.
