MatPat, a popular gaming YouTuber, has announced his retirement from The Game Theorists. Matthew Patrick, the host of The Game Theorists for the past 13 years, has become well-known for his in-depth investigation of the complexities of video game lore and theories. At the time of writing, his channel had 18.4 million subscribers and was a fixture in the YouTube gaming community.
MatPat started his theorist adventure with The Game Theorists, going deep into the lore of games such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Minecraft, and many others. Along the way, he’s added four new channels to the mix: The Film Theorists, GT Live, The Food Theorists, and The Style Theorists.
CEO Matthew and his wife and COO, Stephanie Patrick, own the networks and Theorist Media. According to Matthew, the duo has been “work-first for over a decade” and has successfully built their channels to over 42 million subscribers.
On January 10, MatPat said that he would be leaving the YouTube channels for personal reasons. After nine more theoretical videos and lots of celebration, he will officially stand down on March 9. The channels will not close but will instead welcome new hosts who have appeared in videos and worked tirelessly alongside the business for many years.
Matthew noted in his YouTube announcement video, titled “Goodbye Internet,” that he and Stephanie had been trying to bring on staff members and even worked with a larger organization to assist in maintaining the channel functioning after they moved away.

According to MatPat, when it comes to content development, one can either pick when they are finished or see their hard work, passion, and relevance evaporate. With other YouTubers going away from their content, he wanted to conclude the Theorist channels on a good note rather than have them fade away.
“I love you guys. I do. You’re not just numbers. You’re not just ad impressions; you’re not just merch sales. What you have done for me… and what I have done for you is special.”
MatPat stated that the main reasons for his resignation were to spend more time with his son and to ease the pressures of constant work from his family life. After years of assessing others’ creative ideas, the YouTuber plans to pursue his own, and he assures viewers that he will continue to work behind the scenes of the channels.
Whatever the cause, The Game Theorists has raised money for charity, demonstrating their heart and that of their devoted fan base, and the news of Matthew’s retirement has been met with mixed emotions. With a third of his life devoted to his channels, Matthew will leave a large MatPat-shaped void in the YouTube gaming community.
In the final few minutes of his video, he gushed about how honored he is to have had such a particular position in the childhoods and lives of his subscribers and stated, touchingly and tearfully, “I love you guys. I do. You’re not just numbers. You’re not just ad impressions, you’re not just merch sales. What you have done for me… and what I have done for you is special.”
Why is MatPat Leaving The Game Theorists?
Fortunately, there is no drama connected to his departure. Inspired by the previously stated Tom Scott, Patrick has decided to entrust his idea to the team they’ve been assembling over the years.
All of this in the name of improving his work-life balance and spending more time with his family, claiming that he’s been spending all of his time talking about work with his wife (Stephanie Patrick, who has been a vital part of the management and development of all of the channels for years) and hasn’t had the opportunity to enjoy the very content he talks about in his videos.
During the sad video, MatPat didn’t hold back in explaining his views about the situation: while he’s made the decision, he still finds the whole thing challenging since his passion for what they do remains. However, he also revealed that they were well aware that retirement was their best option if he desired any degree of normalcy in his life.

However, we still have a few weeks of Theories to go. “MatPat’s Final Theory” will be released on March 9, marking his official departure from the channel. Fans will still have new weekly videos of “business as usual” content to look forward to until then.
And, while he won’t quit his brainchild entirely (he stated that he’ll still be engaged with the channels, albeit in a smaller creative position), he’ll be focusing his future efforts on other types of projects that he hasn’t divulged but has teased a little about. The Game Theorists, Film Theory, Food Theory, and Style Theory will be led by current Game Theorists team members.
