Elon Musk said that the reviews of The Super Mario Bros. Movie were written by “disconnected” people.
The best-selling Nintendo video game series was turned into an animated movie for kids, which came out in theaters this week. Most reviews were bad, and Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent gave the movie only two stars.
Rotten Tomatoes, a website that collects reviews, gives The Super Mario Bros. Movie a score of 54% positive reviews, which means it is “Rotten.”
But the audience score, which is decided by people who are not professional critics, is “Fresh,” meaning that 96% of the people who voted liked it.
On Twitter, the website’s controversial CEO replied to a post from @BoredElonMusk that showed a screenshot of the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score.
“Content review systems are broken. Because critics have a problem with Chris Pratt, the ‘experts’ have deemed the new Mario movie a D- even though audiences clearly love it,” The account said.
“Both of these groups are obviously biased, but the disparity here reveals a major problem.”
Musk wrote back: “Wow, the critics are so disconnected from reality!”

Others, on the other hand, were more skeptical about how different audiences and critics seemed to be.
One person said, “This is exactly how these numbers should look given that the movie’s audience is children and most professional critics are adults,”
In 2021, Musk played Wario, Mario’s fat, yellow enemy, in a sketch on Saturday Night Live that got a lot of negative attention.
This week, Jack Black, who plays Mario, said he would “call Elon Musk’s bluff” over his promise to take away the “blue tick” verification from non-paying Twitter accounts.
At the premiere of the movie, he said, “I’m a little embarrassed by the blue check, to be honest with you. Maybe it’s cooler not to have checks. It’s definitely not cool to pay for it.”
Black then said that he wants to “see what happens if I don’t pay for it” and “call his bluff and see if he really takes my check away.”
Elsewhere, Fans of The Super Mario Bros. Movie have warned people who are thinking about going to the movies to see it.
The Super Mario Bros Movie is now playing in movie theaters.
