Nicholas Charles Sparks is a novelist, screenwriter, and film producer from the United States. Author Nicholas Sparks was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 31st, 1965. His father, Patrick Michael Sparks, taught commerce at the university level, while his mother, Jill Emma Marie Sparks (née Thoene), was a housewife and an assistant to an optometrist.
Sparks’s family tree includes Germany, Czech, England, and Ireland. Michael Earl “Micah” Sparks (born 1964) was his older brother, and Danielle “Dana” Sparks Lewis (1966-2000), who died at the age of 33 from a brain tumor, was his younger sister and the inspiration for his novel A Walk to Remember.
Before finally settling in Fair Oaks, California, in 1974, Sparks and his family had previously resided in Watertown, Minnesota; Inglewood, California; Playa Del Rey, California; and Grand Island, Nebraska.
Sparks was the Bella Vista High School class valedictorian in 1984. While attending Notre Dame on a track and field scholarship, he began writing. He eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in business finance with honors and a magna cum laude designation.
The Passing, Sparks’ first unpublished novel, was written in 1985, while The Royal Murders, also unpublished, was written in 1989. In 1989 he settled down in New Bern, North Carolina, with his new wife, Cathy Cote.

Sparks’ first book was the nonfiction title Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding, written with Billy Mills and published by Feather Publishing. In its first year of sale, the book moved 50,000 copies.
Spark’s breakout novel, The Notebook, was purchased by Time Warner Book Group for $1 million in 1995 thanks to the efforts of literary agent Theresa Park.
After its initial October 1996 publication, the novel spent fifty-six weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. After the success of The Notebook, Sparks wrote Message in a Bottle in 1998, and the following year it was adapted into film for the first time.
