Is Cocaine Bear a True Story?

Cocaine Bear, the new movie by Elizabeth Banks, was released in theaters on February 24, 2023, and is currently streaming on Peacock. The narrative of a bear with too much fun with the drug that tormented the bullish ’80s is given to us in this fresh new addition to the cocaine trafficking genre that seems as greedy as the rest.

The trailer for Cocaine Bear reveals that it is a cheesy thriller about a black bear who discovers and consumes at least one brick of cocaine that falls from the sky. The bear then goes on a killing spree, frightening everybody unlucky to be in its path.

Cocaine Bear gives us all the makings of a classic movie inspired by the era, from the wildly over-the-top violence to the star-studded ensemble (O’Shea Jackson Jr., Keri Russell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., and the late, great Ray Liotta). Oh, and by the way, it’s based on a real story.

Is the Story of Cocaine Bear Based on Actual Events?

The events depicted in “The Cocaine Bear” are based on reality. Actual events are less terrifying yet fascinating. The Associated Press reported on December 22, 1985, investigators were hunting for cocaine dumped by a former cop smuggling the narcotic into the United States when they discovered the bones of a black bear that had apparently gotten into the cocaine and overdosed.

The Associated Press’s official account shared a post on Twitter:-

About a month had passed since the bear had been ki!!ed. A duffel bag containing 40 kg of cocaine was found open and scattered near the bear’s body. It is reported that the bear consumed several million dollars worth of cocaine just before its untimely deαth from an overdose.

According to the postmortem results, the bear had all the symptoms of a vast overdose, including brain hemorrhaging and stroke. They started the bear’s stomach “to the brim” with cocaine once the autopsy was completed.

Bear was discovered in Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest, near Blue Ridge. Over the course of 25 years, the teddy bear was handed from owner to owner across the country. He may have even ended up in Waylon Jennings’s custody.

Soon enough, people began referring to the bear as “Pablo Escobear,” a tongue-in-cheek reference to the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobear. Pablo Escobear is currently on exhibit at the Kentucky Fun Mall, his (hopefully) forever home. Ironically, kids and parents, clean people and cokeheads, enjoy Coke Bear. It’s good to know he wasn’t sacrificed for nothing.
