Taylor Swift wants to send a clear message to her fans: please don’t cyber-bully the people I write songs about.
During her performance on The Eras Tour in the US, Taylor took a moment to address her fans before singing her 2010 song, “Dear John.” This song is from her Speak Now album, which she is re-releasing on July 7th.
“I was hoping to ask you that as we lead up to this album coming out, I would love for that kindness and that gentleness to extend onto our internet activities,” Swift said.
“I’m 33 years old, I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote,” she continued, adding her listeners should not “feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”
After her talk, Taylor started singing “Dear John”, a seven-minute breakup song. Many of her fans, known as Swifties, think this song is about her old boyfriend, John Mayer.
Taylor’s request to her fans comes after she released new versions of her albums, Red and Fearless, in 2021. These albums had songs about her past relationships with Jake Gyllenhaal and Joe Jonas.
When these albums were released, Jake and Joe received a lot of negative comments from Taylor’s fans online for several weeks. It appears Taylor wants to avoid such behaviour this time and is asking her fans to be more patient.

What Happened With Taylor Swift and John Mayer?
Taylor Swift and John Mayer had a brief relationship in 2009. At that time, Taylor was 19 years old, while John was 32. It all started when John reached out to Taylor on Twitter after she mentioned him and Kanye West as her favorite musicians.

The pop star has never said for sure or said that the song isn’t about him, but Mayer seems to think that’s what it’s about. He said that he “didn’t deserve” to be called out two years after the song came out.
“It made me feel terrible. It was a really lousy thing to do,” Mayer told Rolling Stone “I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard.”
“[‘Dear John’ is] cheap song writing,” he added. “It’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait til he gets a load of this!’ That’s bulls–t.”
It appears that one of Taylor Swift’s former boyfriends, Taylor Lautner, also believes that the song “Dear John” is about John Mayer.
Taylor Lautner, who dated Swift in 2008, made a lighthearted comment when the re-release of the album Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) was announced in May. He joked that he was “praying for John,” suggesting that he understood the song’s context and its connection to John Mayer.
