After his predecessor Yves Saint Laurent was enlisted in the French military in 1960, Bohan, the son of a milliner, was asked to head the French label. From 1961 through 1989, he led the company as artistic director and produced sophisticated and stylish customized designs for contemporary women.
He introduced the “slim” design, a slimmed-down version of Dior’s iconic form with feminine shoulders and subtly elegant skirts, in his first couture presentation for the house in 1961.
A large collection of Marc Bohan’s haute couture creations has been graciously donated to the FIDM Museum by one of the designer’s most cherished customers, Betsy Bloomingdale.
