Mark Allan Hoppus is a musician from the United States. He was born on March 15, 1972. He is most known for his roles as the bassist, co-lead vocalist, and only consistent member of the rock band Blink-182. In addition, he is a member of the pop rock duo Simple Creatures alongside the frontman for All Time Low, Alex Gaskarth.
At the age of 15, Hoppus’s father bought him a bass guitar, which he began playing shortly after developing an interest in skateboarding and punk music in junior high. When he relocated to San Diego in 1992 to attend California State University San Marcos, his sister put him in touch with Tom DeLonge, and the two of them, along with drummer Scott Raynor, established the band Blink-182.
Before signing to major label MCA to co-distribute their sophomore effort, 1997’s Dude Ranch, which featured the Hoppus-penned hit “Dammit,” the band recorded several rock records and went on an extensive tour. The band’s debut album was released in 1996.
Enema of the State (1999), the album that Blink-182 created after replacing Raynor with Travis Barker and using it to push them to multi-platinum success, was released. The band released two more albums after that, including the harder Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (2001) and the more experimental untitled fifth album (2003), before disbanding in 2005 due to internal tensions in the band.
In the latter part of the 2000s, Hoppus and Barker maintained their musical collaboration as +44. Following that, Blink-182 got back together in 2009 and has since continued to make new music and tour all over the world.
Aside from his work as a musician, Hoppus has also had a great deal of success behind the recording console. He has produced records for a variety of bands, including Idiot Pilot, New Found Glory, The Matches, Motion City Soundtrack, and PAWS, among others. In the past, he was a co-owner of two different businesses called Atticus and Macbeth Footwear.
In 2012, he launched a new apparel line under the brand name Hi My Name is Mark. In 2005 and 2006, Hoppus was the host of a weekly podcast, which he continued in 2015, and from 2010 to 2012, he was the host of his own television talk programme, Hoppus on Music, which aired on Fuse.
Blink-182 have reunited with founding member Tom DeLonge and announced a tour for the year 2023. A new song will be released on Friday, and it will mark the first time the band’s classic lineup of DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker has performed together since 2015.
On Friday, the original line-up of the band consisting of DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker will also release a comeback track titled “Edging” (October 14). According to a press release, the band is planning to release a new album in the next year. In 1992, DeLonge and Mark Hoppus laid the groundwork for what would become Blink-182. Their first studio album, titled Cheshire Cat, was released in 1995, then two years later, in 1997, they released Dude Ranch, which featured the song “Dammit.”
Following the departure of the band’s original drummer Scott Raynor in 1998, Travis Barker joined in time for the recording of the band’s multi-platinum album Enema of the State in 1999. This album featured the hit singles “What’s My Age Again?” and “All the Small Things.”
After that, in 2001, they released Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, which became their first album to debut atop the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Box Car Racer was a side project that DeLonge and Barker worked on together as a duet and released an album under the same name in 2002.
The band Blink-182 came out with an album under their own name the year after that, but in 2005 they announced that they would be taking an indefinite break from making music. Barker became a prolific session drummer, specializing in the pop-punk and hip-hop music scenes, while DeLonge focused on his band Angels & Airwaves, which published their debut album in 2006.
Barker was injured in an aircraft crash in 2008, which led to the three members of the band getting back together for a reunion tour in 2009. The album Neighborhoods was released by Blink-182 in 2011, and the band continued to tour throughout the early 2010s. Tom DeLonge left the band in early 2015, though.
In an interview with Rolling Stone at the time, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker discussed Tom DeLonge’s departure from the band. They said that after the band signed a recording contract and booked a studio for album sessions, Hoppus and Barker received emails from DeLonge’s management announcing that he was leaving the band.
This occurred after the band had already begun working on the band’s new album. “To be quite honest, I wasn’t that surprised since his attitude leading up to that had been not enthused and not interested,” Hoppus recalled. “There was just no excitement and no curiosity.”
Barker criticized DeLonge for being “ungrateful” and “disrespectful” for having his manager inform them of the news rather than calling them personally. It’s unclear why Blink ever decided to get back together in the first place, according to Barker, who made this statement.
Matt Skiba, formerly of Alkaline Trio, was recruited by Blink-182 after Tom DeLonge left the band. The first album, titled California, was released in 2016, and the second, titled Nine, was released in 2019. The band continued to tour often throughout the late 2010s as well, and they were scheduled to give a performance at the infamously disastrous Fyre Festival.
Despite being absent from the band for some time, DeLonge has maintained his recording schedule with Angels & Airwaves. It is notable that he has devoted a significant portion of his time to the investigation of conspiracies, UFOs, and aliens.
In 2015, he established the company To the Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences and served as the executive producer of the television series Unidentified: Inside America’s UFO Investigation, which aired on the History Channel. The Pentagon finally declassified the UFO footage that DeLonge’s business had previously submitted to them in the year 2020.
In recent years, Barker has developed into something of a ubiquitous figure in both popular cultures and the tabloid press. Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, Willow, and XXXTentacion are just a few of the artists he has worked with in the past. Kourtney Kardashian and he tied the knot in May of 2022.
After School Radio is a radio programme broadcast on Apple Music 1 that Hoppus has hosted as of the year 2019. He disclosed that he had been diagnosed with cancer in 2021, and later the same year, he stated that he was no longer affected by the disease. Hoppus disclosed this information in an interview with People that was published in August 2022.
The interview took place before Hoppus began his chemotherapy treatment. According to Hoppus, “that was the first time that all three of us were in the same room in like, five years.” It has actually improved since it was first introduced. There was no plan for the meeting. There were no hard feelings that lingered on.
