A Look at Kristin Chenoweth’s Accident on the Good Wife

When Kristin was filming The Good Wife in 2012, an accident occurred. The actress remembered having equipment struck by lightning fall on her. The incident resulted in a “seven-inch skull fracture, hairline fracture, and teeth and ribs,” EW reports.

“I heard, like, a flagpole sound. I literally heard, ‘We’re losing the light.’ I heard, ‘Action.’ And I woke up at Bellevue [Hospital],” she told Andy Cohen during her appearance in Watch What Happens Live.

“My hair extensions, you know, made the hairline fracture go together. My doctor said, ‘What are these metal things?’ And I said, ‘They’re hair extensions.’ And he said, ‘They saved your life. So, anyone who wants to get hair extensions should, for your health.”

She Claimed That the Incident Made Her Doubt Herself

Kristin said that the incident had also affected her psychologically.

“‘I hate everyone. Mostly me. I am my only friend. Everyone is paid or scattered. This business is killing me, yet I’ve given up everything for it. I don’t even know how to do anything else. If I could be happy, I would. God, hear me. Please. I might be done. Where. Do. I. Go,’” she wrote in her memoir, as reported by TODAY.

“That moment changed everything. It changed me. I struggled through a long, dark valley of depression, but in the months and years that followed, something in my addled brain began to stir.”

She is now a Mental Health Advocate

To give others a voice, Kristin finally spoke about what had occurred. She told the outlet: “It was suggested to me that I should never take action because I might not work again in the business,” she told TODAY. “And out of fear, out of fear and anxiety, I didn’t. And I just want to say to anyone out there who ever struggles with anything like this, don’t let fear rule your life. And by me sharing that story, I hope that encourages others to not do that.”

Kristin Chenoweth attempts to help others by drawing on her nearly tragic experience. On the set of the CBS show “The Good Wife, Chenoweth was struck by lighting equipment in 2012, suffering significant injuries such as a cracked rib, a skull fracture, a broken nose, broken teeth, and damage to the nerve, tissue, and muscles. After the incident, she resigned from her regular part of the program.

Chenoweth had provided some hospital updates at the time of the accident. Still, in her most recent book, “I’m No Philosopher, But I Got Thoughts,” she goes into greater detail about her recovery process. In an interview with Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb on TODAY on January 17, Chenoweth claimed that writing about the tragedy had liberated her.

“It was scary at first, and also very freeing because I haven’t really written it down. When you write something, it makes it so. It really does solidify it,” she said.

The 54-year-old Tony and Emmy Award-winning performer describes waking up in the hospital in her book and explains how her hair extensions saved her life.

“(The lighting equipment) hit me full frontal and slammed me to the pavement,” she writes. “My head cracked against the curb, leaving a seven-inch gash that would have been worse, the doctor told me, if not for the tightly woven hair extensions that held my scalp together. That’s right. I owed what was left of my concussed brain to a well-placed line of hair extensions. Never — never — underestimate the power of a good weave.”

Chenoweth claimed the incident did more than cause physical harm; it also started her on a path of insecurity and anxiety. She included a “sad moment” from her diary that she had written following the injury in the book.

‘I hate everyone. Mostly me. I am my only friend. Everyone is paid or scattered. This business is killing me, yet I’ve given up everything for it. I don’t even know how to do anything else. If I could, and be happy, I would. God, hear me. Please. I might be done. Where. Do. I. Go,'” Chenoweth wrote in the diary excerpt included in her memoir.

According to Chenoweth, mental health problems persist.

“That moment changed everything. It changed me. I struggled through a long, dark valley of depression, but in the months and years that followed, something in my addled brain began to stir,” she writes.

Chenoweth has benefited from talking about the accident after keeping quiet. Chenoweth now hopes that her experience may encourage those who believe speaking up is not in their best interests to do so.

“It was suggested to me that I should never take action because I might not work again in the business,” she told TODAY. “And out of fear, out of fear and anxiety, I didn’t. And I just want to say to anyone out there who ever struggles with anything like this, don’t let fear rule your life. And by me sharing that story, I hope that encourages others to not do that.”

Final Lines

Chenoweth went on to detail the 2012 incident, which occurred while she was acting in a recurring role in Season 4 of the series. The actor stated that she was hospitalized after receiving a “seven-inch skull fracture, a hairline fracture, cracked teeth and ribs” after falling lighting equipment struck her.
