As one of the film’s major turning points, Gonker’s diagnosis of Addison’s disease is made public. Adrenal insufficiency necessitates monthly injections to maintain the animal’s health. This means that there is little spare time for the family. If the pet parents can’t find Gonker in a little over twenty days, he may pass out from exposure to the elements. Fielding and his father started looking for the dog immediately. His mother, Virginia aids him in this endeavor by establishing a home base of operations.
