Gonker from Dog Gone is an excellent pet. He likes to play fetch but only with the stick of his choosing and he can pretzel into a formidable yoga pose. The new movie’s trailer reveals, however that Gonker is more than just a good dog; he’s a lost dog. Each of us needs to be loved by at least one person who accepts us for who we truly are.
That’s how I pictured Gonker, anyway. Because of this, he has become disoriented. After hearing these words, Fielding Marshall (Johnny Berchtold) and his father, John (Rob Lowe) set out on an epic journey to find their lost dog, Gonker, who they believe is somewhere along the Appalachian Trail.
What is the Story of Dog Gone?
Dog Gone is based on Pauls Toutonghi‘s 2016 true story which is sure to give you a lump in your throat; a man loses his best friend but there’s more at stake than just that. To save Gonker’s life, Fielding and John have just two weeks to track down the necessary medication. They are determined to find their pet and bring him home at any cost and they have the support of Fielding’s mom, Jinny (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) as well as countless random people.

A large portion of Dog Gone is based on Gonker’s fascinating true story. A desperate search ensued after Gonker disappeared from the Appalachian Trail and the media and regular citizens pitched in to help. Addison’s disease which Gonker had necessitated monthly injections so even the film’s ticking clock is based on a real medical condition.
I’m really happy with how the film turned out, Lowe gushed to Tudum. Just the experience of it will make you feel a wide range of emotions. However, there was one significant change made from the book to the film. Although Marshall’s dog Gonker is depicted as a yellow Labrador retriever in the film, Marshall’s actual dog was a golden retriever mix.
It’s typical for yellow labs to take all the acting roles for dogs in Hollywood. Dog Gone, directed by Stephen Herek and based on a screenplay by Nick Santora, will premiere on Netflix around the world on January 13. As one of the film’s major turning points, Gonker’s diagnosis of Addison’s disease is made public. Adrenal insufficiency necessitates monthly injections to maintain the animal’s health. This means that there is little spare time for the family. If the pet parents can’t find Gonker in a little over twenty days, he may pass out from exposure to the elements. Fielding and his father started looking for the dog immediately. His mother, Virginia aids him in this endeavor by establishing a home base of operations.
