The organization, among the top corporate donors in the U.S., will continue to seek and invest in other areas where it can bring about significant change, such as constructing affordable housing or giving children in marginalized regions access to computer science education.
We have begun delivering the following email to AmazonSmile customers today, and we also want to share it with you here:
To make it simpler for customers to support their preferred organizations, we introduced AmazonSmile in 2013. The program hasn’t developed to have the influence we had planned for after almost ten years. Because there were so many qualifying organizations—more than a million worldwide—our capacity to make a difference was frequently compromised.
We inform you that AmazonSmile will be shut down by February 20, 2023. We will continue to pursue and invest in other areas where we believe we can make a real difference, such as the construction of affordable housing, the availability of computer science education for students in underserved communities, and the use of logistics infrastructure and technology to support large populations affected by natural disasters.
We will give charities that have participated in the AmazonSmile program a one-time donation equal to three months of the revenue they received from the program in 2022 to assist them with this transition. They will also be able to collect additional donations up until the program’s closure in February. Charities will still be able to ask Amazon shoppers for donations once AmazonSmile is discontinued by making their wish lists.

As a business, we will continue to support numerous such initiatives that benefit thousands of nonprofit organizations and communities around the United States. For illustration:
We are investing $2 billion in the Housing Equity Fund to provide and maintain affordable housing in our communities of origin. We have funded the construction of more than 14,000 cheap houses in just two years, and we plan to build at least 6,000 more shortly. More than 18,000 low- to moderate-income families, many of whom have children, will reside in these units. Our investments have been able to at least 20% boost the supply of affordable housing in places like Bellevue, Washington, and Arlington, Virginia, in just one year.
The computer science curricula for more than 600,000 students in more than 5,000 schools—all in underserved communities—have been financed by Amazon Future Engineer. This year, we want to reach an extra 1 million pupils. Fifty-five thousand students in our hometowns have also received immediate aid from us in warm winter clothing, food, and school materials.
Community Delivery Program: Using our logistical infrastructure, we have delivered more than 23 million meals to families in need in 35 U.S. communities. We have plans to distribute 12 million more meals this year alone. Along with offering delivery services, we’ve also given away 30 million meals to localities nationwide.
Amazon Disaster Relief: To quickly assist communities devastated by natural catastrophes, we are using our logistics expertise, inventory, and cloud technologies. For instance, our Disaster Relief team has responded to more than 95 natural disasters, established a Disaster Relief Hub in Atlanta with more than 1 million relief products prepared for deployment, and donated more than 20 million relief items to nonprofits assisting communities on the ground.

Giving back to the community: We provide financial support to hundreds of regional charities in the areas where our staff members and their families reside. For instance, we give hundreds of millions of dollars every year to groups that support the development of stronger communities, such as youth sports leagues, regional community colleges, and shelters for families who are homeless.
Our long-term commitment to our communities remains the same, and we’ll keep trying to make a difference in various ways. We’re also determined to improve things daily for our clients, team members, and society.
