With The Sixth Sense, director M. Night Shyamalan found his footing in the film industry, received critical acclaim, and was nominated for an Academy Award. With subsequent films like Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village all including surprising discoveries in their climaxes, Shyamalan established a reputation for his “twist” endings, an expectation from which he finds it difficult to escape.

Fans of the Paul G. Tremblay novel The Cabin at the End of the World, on which the new film Knock at the Cabin is based, may have been wondering whether or not they were in for a second surprise; they may rest easy. A family on vacation at a cabin is invaded by a gang of strangers who claim to have had apocalyptic visions, a plot point shared by both the novel and the movie.

As Leonard (Dave Bautista) explains, the family can stop the end of the world by sacrificing one of their own. As the family naturally begins to mistrust these statements, the strangers offer themselves one by one to prove that such acts of kindness always lead to terrible consequences. In other words, the story does not have a surprising revelation that changes all that happened before it. Even while the film doesn’t have a typical twist, it does have a unique conclusion.

A giant tsunami hits the Oregon coast, a terrible virus spreads to other towns, and planes mysteriously crash to the ground worldwide. One of the dads, Eric (Jonathan Groff), has a concussion and begins to wonder if these happenings are related to the cabin. After Leonard, the lone survivor of the intruders, makes the ultimate sacrifice by jumping in front of a bolt of lightning, it appears like the end of the world may be at hand.

Explaining that he and his wife Wen (Kristen Cui) will have a great life without him, Eric persuades his husband Andrew (Ben Aldridge) to kill him. Andrew agrees to the sacrifice and leaves the hut with Wen. Stopping in at a nearby diner, they find that the customers are watching news coverage of the recent tragedy, where they learn that the victims and their attackers have been eliminated through careful planning. In the end, it seems irrelevant whether Eric’s death averted the end of the world as long as the tragedies ceased.

Things are left a little vaguer in Tremblay’s story, but there are still terrible incidents. In the novel, Andrew manages to escape the cabin to grab his gun before the second intruder is sacrificed. When is killed by Leonard in a scuffle for the gun as he kills the intruder? Leonard, overcome with guilt, agrees to be restrained, but the remaining intruder, Sabrina, begins having second thoughts about their goal.

Following Leonard’s death, Sabrina leads Andrew and Eric to the getaway car the intruders used to access the lodge, where she ultimately takes her own life. After Leonard insists that Wen’s inadvertent sacrifice isn’t good enough because their visions insist the gift must be a voluntary participation, Eric offers to end his own life.

The novel ends on a more uncertain and unsettled note as Andrew rejects either living without Eric or offering a sacrifice to a God who would not consider Wen an acceptable sacrifice. Although the ending of Knock at the Cabin may be seen as a twist by some viewers (in comparison to the novel, which also fails to provide any substantial resolution to the mystery), in contrast to the pivotal reveals in previous M. Night Shyamalan films, it is decidedly less stunning.
