On March 24, 1966, Tonya Knight, an American bodybuilding champion, was born in Peculiar, Missouri. As a pioneer of female weightlifting in the 1980s, she rose to fame among female fitness enthusiasts. The mother-of-one first gained notoriety in 1988 when, at the age of 22, she placed fourth in the prestigious Ms Olympia competition.

The next year, she won first place in Ms International as well. But the victory was clouded by controversy because Tonya later acknowledged using a substitute to submit to the event’s required drug test. Officials from the International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness suspended her and revoked her titles in 1989.

After the episode in 1991, Tonya went back on stage and won Ms. International without incident. Before quitting at the age of 26, the bodybuilder participated in a small number of other professional tournaments. But her amazing body, flawless posing, and proportional perfection made sure she stayed in admirers’ imaginations. 2011 saw Tonya’s induction into the IFBB Pro League Hall of Fame.
