Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi broke the rules when they got married in August 2008. Their love story continues to inspire people. The two people met at a party in 2000 but didn’t become more than just friends until 2004. After VH1’s Big in ’04 awards show, they started dating, which gave de Rossi the confidence she needed to come out as gay in public.
“I’ve had many years of not being open,” she told the Advocate in August 2005, even though she had been linked to ex-girlfriend Francesca Gregorini. “It’s an honor for me to do this; it’s just nice to be asked.”
The former Ally McBeal star said, “About a year ago, I met Ellen at a photo shoot, and she took my breath away.” I had never seen someone and felt all the things you hear about in songs and read about in poetry. My knees were weak. It was great. And it was hard for me to stop thinking about her after that… We were just meant to be together… I just couldn’t get over how I felt about Ellen.”
DeGeneres, on the other hand, has said many times how much she loves de Rossi.
“Portia understands me completely. In our vows, she recited a quote — ‘It is good to be loved. It is profound to be understood — and to me, that’s everything. What ‘I love you’ really means is ‘I understand you,’ and she loves me for everything that I am,” the talk show host gushed to Good Housekeeping in 2017. She supports me and makes me happy.” The Scandal alum, for her part, has also frequently shared sweet tributes about her partner.
When DeGeneres was accused of having a bad work environment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in July 2020, her wife defended her. In August 2020, the Australian woman posted a photo on Instagram that said “I Stand by Ellen” and thanked the couple’s fans for their support during the scandal.
