On Tuesday, King Charles’ coronation invitation—in which his wife was given the official title of Queen Camilla—was made public by Buckingham Palace. The elaborate invitation said, “The coronation of their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla,” and was printed on recycled card with an illustrated border of wildflowers and the Green Man from British legend.
Upon the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband’s ascension to the throne, Camilla assumed the title of Queen Consort. To distinguish Her Majesty from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, it made sense to refer to her as the Queen Consort in the early months of His Majesty’s rule, according to a royal source cited by PA Media.
The royal insider continued, ‘Queen Camilla’ is the proper title to set against ‘King Charles’ on the invitation. It’s appropriate to start referring to Queen Camilla in official capacities after the coronation. Every former Queen Consort has been referred to as “Queen” followed by their first name.
According to a statement from the palace, the invitation will be extended to “2,000 guests who will form the congregation in Westminster Abbey” for the service on May 6. One of the eight boys chosen to “attend Their Majesties at the Coronation Service” will be Prince George, Charles’ grandson and successor to the throne.
According to the press announcement, the ensemble includes three of Camilla’s grandchildren. The palace also unveiled a brand-new portrait of the pair on Tuesday. It was taken last month in Buckingham Palace by British photographer Hugo Burnand, who also captured their 2005 wedding.
Changing Attitudes
The alteration in Camilla’s title on the invitation symbolizes her arduous battle in the court of public opinion. Since she and Charles got married, Camilla has put in a lot of effort in her role as a senior royal, supporting charities that aid women and children while supporting Charles.
But, a lot of people find it difficult to forgive or forget about their protracted relationship and the suffering it brought Charles’ first wife, the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Over the years, speculation about the title she might assume when Charles ascended to the throne has grown.
When Charles succeeded to the throne, she would be addressed as “Princess Consort,” Clarence House announced in a statement in 2005. The public, according to some in the palace at the time, wasn’t prepared for Camilla to succeed Diana as queen.

But, opinions about Camilla have changed through time. One in four British had grown to like Elizabeth more, according to a CNN poll from 2015, and fewer people opposed her becoming known as the queen. Then, in February 2022, the late Queen Elizabeth used the historic occasion of her Platinum Jubilee to express her approval, declaring that the Duchess of Cornwall would be acknowledged “as Queen Consort as she continues her devoted service” when Charles ascended to the throne.
Three days of festivities around the nation will mark the coronation, and anybody is welcome to attend. The absence of US President Joseph Biden from the coronation was officially announced by the White House on Tuesday. First Lady Jill Biden will attend the coronation on behalf of the US, the President stated in a readout of the chat between Biden and King Charles provided by the White House.
The President also congratulated Charles on the impending occasion. The transcript states that Biden “conveyed his wish to meet with the King in the United Kingdom at a later date.” Biden is following tradition, according to US authorities, as no US president before him has ever attended a British monarch’s coronation.
