The second season of the teen drama “School Spirits” has been picked up by Paramount+. Peyton List plays Maddie Nears in the show, a teenage girl trapped in the afterlife who is looking into her own puzzling disappearance. Maddie embarks on a case-solving adventure as she adjusts to high school hell, but the more secrets and falsehoods she unearths the closer she comes to the truth.

The cast also features Rainbow Wedell as Claire Zomer, Nick Pugliese as Charley, Kiara Pichardo as Nicole Herrera, Sarah Yarkin as Rhonda, Milo Manheim as Wally Clark, Spencer MacPherson as Xavier Baxter, and Kristian Ventura as Simon Elroy.

The executive producing team for Sherri Shepherd’s talk show has been announced for season 2. Season 1 received favorable reviews, earning an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Daniel D’Addario, the head TV critic for Variety, said of the show: “Without losing sight of the sorrow of Maddie’s story, ‘School Spirits’ manages to be surprisingly sparky and fun — proof positive that there are new stories to tell about the institution no one would ever want to be stuck in for their entire afterlife.”

“School Spirits” is a production of Awesomeness Studios, and it was developed by Nate Trinrud and Megan Trinrud, who also authored the pilot. Oliver Goldstick is the showrunner. The first two episodes of the show were directed and executive produced by Max Winkler, who also serves as the series executive producer. Also produced is List.

Maddie has Simon investigate her mother. Simon learns of her mother’s hidden booze stashes. After searching Sandra’s room, he goes to Maddie’s since Maddie reported Sandra started hiding items there too. Simon finds an envelope Sandra was looking at in a previous episode and discovers Maddie’s necklace, which she was wearing on the day she died but didn’t have as a ghost.

They then bring Sandra to the school so Maddie can see Simon question her since she knows all her tells and when Sandra is lying. Ms. Fields (Kalyn Miles) informs Simon that Maddie won an award, and Simon suggests Sandra accept it.

Simon pretends to work on a Maddie speech in Ms. Fields’ classroom but really questions Sandra about the jewelry. She avoids the subject, one of her specialties, but he keeps pushing with Maddie’s help, and they find the truth about Sandra’s drunken arrival at the school. Sandra doesn’t reveal the truth.

Maddie recalls her mom’s visit when she feels her jewelry. Sandra arrived and told Maddie she didn’t need treatment. Maddie takes her away, and Sandra tells Maddie she bought a cabin up north she heard about in treatment.

Sandra also spent Maddie’s college fund money. Sandra claims they’ll sort it out and schools are cheaper up north, but Maddie says she’s heading to Chicago to avoid Sandra. When the bell rings, Maddie takes her mother to the boiler room, where she died.
