According to the show’s creator, Tony Schumacher, production on season 2 of The Responder will begin later this year.
The five-part first season, which followed Liverpool police officer Chris Carson as he struggled to keep his life together after being entangled in the city’s criminal underbelly, was a big hit on BBC1 and the BBC iPlayer.
Martin Freeman led an all-star ensemble as the troubled copper in the first season, earning accolades from critics for his portrayal of a man on the point of a mental health crisis owing to the stress of his job. Now he’s poised to return for a six-part sequel that will take us deeper into his complicated world.
Tony Schumacher explained to Radio Times–
“These characters have grown and the situations have changed slightly. Where they live has changed slightly. Everything has just shifted. I want them to do new things and move forward.”
Here’s all we know so far about The Responder season 2…
When will The Responder Season 2 Premiere on BBC1?
The screenplays have been completed, and the show’s creator, Tony Schumacher, plans to begin filming in September 2023.
So, assuming everything goes as planned, a 2024 release date is most likely, though we don’t expect it to be ready in January or February when the first series premiered. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more information.
Tony Schumacher’s police thriller The Responder was one of the best TV shows of 2022. He updated fans on season 2 after the show celebrated its first anniversary.
The writer revealed on Twitter that he’d spent the day watching star Martin Freeman read the screenplay for the first episode of the follow-up run and suggested that there’s a lot to look forward to when the program returns.
“Happy #TheResponder day!” he wrote. “It’s weird, and I don’t want to torment you, but having spent the day sitting in a room with the great team at Dancing Ledge Productions and Martin reading first episode of season 2, well, all I can say is I think you’re in for a treat…”

What Could Happen in the Responder Season 2?
To purchase Casey’s silence, Chris Carson stole the cocaine from her and gave it to Carl Sweeney’s widow as the first season ended. Then, while her brother was incarcerated, he advised Dr. Diane Gallagher to inform her superiors that the police had seized the drugs.
The unhappy constable returned home in the last scenes and promised to start over with his wife Kate (MyAnna Buring) before he and partner Rachel Hargreaves (Adelayo Adedayo) resumed their patrols. Will his strategy to put those shady activities behind him succeed, though?
We’re eager to find out, but Schumacher has made it clear that in all his works, the people are equally as significant as the story.
Everyone always tells me to add more plots to my project. We require an additional story. It’s all about the people to me. The film is about Marco (Josh Finan), Casey (Emily Fairn), Chris, and Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo) and the experiences they have had. Over the episodes, you could only get bigger. After Season 1, you could only be a different person from who you were at the start of Season 1.
And everyone is giving it their all. When we first met them, everyone was just trying to act normally, and that’s still how we find them today. They are all there, acting “normal,” simply trying to get by. Chris is now in that location. He’s merely attempting to reassemble the components.
Although Chris may be certain that persuading Dr. Gallagher’s boss that their cache has been seized will save her brother’s life, there is no assurance that her boss will accept her justification. May she return to ask Chris for the money if the show is revived?
Also, if a new series does come to our screens, Ray Mullen may decide to renew his vendetta against Chris. Carl’s widow, Jodie, might also reappear if she has trouble moving the medication Chris provided her.
Also unexplored was a compelling plotline concerning Chris’s controlling father; may Tony Schumacher touch on this in a potential second season?
Young Casey and Marco, played by Emily Fairn and Josh Finan and were hugely popular with viewers, are two characters we most certainly hope return if there is a new season!

Which Cast Members Will Be Back?
Martin Freeman will return, which is no surprise given his expressed desire to reprise the role.
“Chris is a character I’d like to return to because I’m a sucker for good scripts,” he said. “I’ll walk anywhere for a good script, and we had a great team on this. I love the team, it’s beautifully produced and so yeah I would hope to do it again!”
The cast members listed below are also anticipated to return…
- Adelayo Adedayo as Rachel Hargreaves
- MyAnna Buring as Kate Carson
- Emily Fairn as Casey
- Josh Finan as Marco
Warren Brown had expressed interest in returning to the show, saying, “So often you don’t know how well something’s going to be received, so you don’t know from the off that they want to do more of a series.”
“But I think more and more now when an audience reaction has been great for a show; there’s definite scope to do more. So there are murmurs of season two, but nothing set in stone. I’d love to go back if that happens.”
