Oregon Homeless to Receive $1000 a Month with No Rules Attached

A bill that has been proposed in Oregon would give the state’s homeless people $1,000 per month, which they could use however they wanted.

The bill, introduced last month, would set up the People’s Housing Assistance Fund Demonstration Program. This program would give 12 payments of $1,000 each to people who are homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless.

The bill says that payments can be used “Payments may be used for rent, emergency expenses, food, child care or other goods or services of the participant’s choosing,”

People who spend more than half of their monthly income on rent and who make 60% or less of the median income in their area would also be able to get the money.

The law would also require the Portland State University Homelessness Research and Action Collaborative to study how effective the long-term cash assistance program would be for different demographics, household types, and other factors, such as domestic violence.

The bill says that the program would last until January 2026, when the study would have to be presented. The Post asked state Sen. Wlnsvey Campos and state Rep. Khanh Pham for a comment, but neither responded immediately.

Data show that as many as 14,650 people in Oregon are without homes. Oregon has had a problem with homeless people for a long time, especially in places like Portland, where as many as 700 tent camps have taken over parts of the city.

Since the state passed a law making street drugs less illegal last year, there has been more drug use and trafficking. Just seven months after the law went into effect, the state Health Authority said it had “failed.”
