Bobbi Kristina Autopsy Reveals She Died From Combination of Drugs and Drowning

The Fulton County Medical Examiner said Friday that Bobbi Kristina Brown died from accidental drowning and drug overdose. A toxicology investigation detected marijuana, alcohol, “a cocaine-related substance,” sedative and anti-anxiety drugs, and morphine in her system.

Ahead of the complete autopsy release, the medical examiner’s office in Atlanta noted that toxicology testing could not verify whether the morphine was the product of heroin usage. Brown’s family released a statement on her 23rd birthday, which provides details on her health on the day she was discovered unresponsive in the bathtub on January 21, 2015. (Between admissions to the hospital, a rehabilitation facility, and hospice care, Brown ultimately passed away on July 26.)

Medical data, investigative files, and other materials were utilized to establish how Brown died, according to officials. “The underlying cause of death is the condition which starts the downhill course of events leading to death and in this case is the immersion associated with drug intoxication,” the medical examiner’s office said in the statement. “The pneumonia and encephalopathy are more immediate causes which resulted from the immersion and drug intoxication.”

However, the medical examiner’s office was unable to establish whether Brown’s death was accidental or deliberate (such as a suicide or homicide). Although it was previously reported that there were “no significant injuries” at the time of her “non-natural death,” this information was kept under wraps according to a court order.

The medical examiner’s office said in July that the time lapse between the incident in January and Brown’s death in July would “complicate reconstruction of the events surrounding her initial unresponsiveness. Interpretation of autopsy findings and other information will also be challenging. However, an autopsy could be helpful to address questions which may arise about the cause of her unresponsiveness and eventual death.”

Her 20-year-old boyfriend, Nick Gordon, was raised as Brown’s son by her late mother Whitney Houston but was never formally adopted by the family. Claims that Gordon “injected her with a hazardous concoction” and that Brown “died due to a violent altercation with Defendant (Gordon)” are categorically disputed by Gordon’s legal team in a wrongful death complaint.

Gordon’s attorney stated in a letter to PEOPLE last month that his client was “dehumanized by the fictitious allegations” and continued to “grieve privately.” Gordon wrote, “Happy Birthday baby girl!!” on Facebook on Friday, the day before what would have been Brown’s 23rd birthday.

In an interview with PEOPLE published in February, Brown’s best friend and former roommate Mason Whitaker lamented on the loss of the late Houston and Bobby Brown’s only child.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think about her and the amazing influence she had on my life,” Whitaker said after the one-year anniversary of her near-drowning. “Her vibrant spirit will live on forever. It devastates me to think the world won’t be able to experience the amazing person she was.”

On Friday, the medical examiner for Fulton County, Georgia, confirmed that Bobbi Kristina Brown drowned and died of an overdose of prescription painkillers. Marijuana, alcohol, “a cocaine-related substance,” sedative and anti-anxiety medicines, and morphine were all found in her system during the toxicological analysis.
