Fans of the Marvel comics long speculated that Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff might become the MCU’s next Thanos-level villain. In fact, Marvel has stated that this was the original plan all along. SDCC 2022 revealed Marvel’s schedule until 2026, and the next two phases of the studio’s phases, Secret Invasion and The Kang Dynasty, pretty well put an end to that hope by confirming Kang the Conqueror as the next major villain.
Since her introduction to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, fans have debated whether or not Elizabeth Olsen’s character is genuinely a villain. Wanda frequently demonstrates both heroism and villainy.
In WandaVision, she sacrificed her magically created husband and home to right her wrongs, and in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, she brutally slaughtered dozens of innocents in horrifying ways to satisfy her delusions, earning her a complex character and a strong relationship with fans. Here are some of the many reasons why the Scarlet Witch should be the MCU’s next big villain instead of someone else.
Scarlet Witch Might Be The Strongest Being In Existence
Among the Avengers, the Scarlet Witch unquestionably wields the most power. She defeated the Mad Titian all by herself after Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America combined were unable to defeat him in a fight against Thanos. However, the Scarlet Witch is not just strong; she can also alter the course of events.
Wanda isolated a town using her Chaos Magic and had all of its residents live out her sitcom-style fantasy. She travels through time with the town and even brings back the deceased Vision to marry him. Wanda’s self-titled WandaVision was another universe in which she imposed her whims on everyone else.
Wanda reveals her true might in the latter Multiverse of Madness. Wanda uses her illusions to trick Doctor Strange into giving her the power she seeks, and then she turns on him when he refuses to give it to her. Wanda then pursues him and single-handedly destroys the enchanted castle of Kamar-Taj, home to hundreds of powerful magic users.
Following Strange through the Multiverse, she comes upon the Illuminati, a band of alternate Avengers like Captain Marvel and Black Bolt, and promptly eliminates five of Earth’s mightiest heroes in a matter of minutes. This shows that Scarlet Witch can easily defeat some of the MCU’s strongest characters and emphasizes the fact that she has yet to face her match.

Wanda’s Story Makes Her More Compelling
Wanda has the saddest backstory of any Marvel character since she has lost everything and everyone she has ever cared about. More than any other hero, she bore the brunt of her own acts, both good and terrible.
Wanda’s life has been filled with tragedy: she lost both parents when she was young, she was turned into a weapon by terrorist experiments, her brother was killed, she indirectly caused the Avengers to split and fight each other, and she had to blow a hole in the head of her beloved to stop Thanos, only to watch him killed again right before she vanishes.
She has a breakdown after being restored back to life when the Avengers defeat Thanos, and she loses control of her abilities, bringing her deceased husband Vision back to life in an imaginary universe. She is about to embark on a killing spree throughout the Multiverse when she realizes she is being misled and is responsible for the suffering of innocents.
Wanda spends her whole time in the MCU trying to figure out who she can trust, what sadness is, where she can find happiness, and how to raise children, so there’s a lot to digest there. Fans have spent over a decade getting to know Wanda intimately, watching her experience love, tragedy, and the realization that everyone, no matter how strong, has a limit.
Spending so much time with Wanda has given her a human quality in the eyes of the audience, cementing her place in their hearts in a way that no other movie villain has before.

An Avenger Fighting The Avengers Would Be An Epic Battle
The Scarlet Witch’s standing as the finest villain in the MCU, according to many fans, would have been further raised if Wanda had been pitted against the Avengers. Although Wanda was not yet at her full potential in Age of Ultron, she faced up against many of the Avengers and almost turned them against one other before she ultimately switched sides.
Wanda, an Avenger who has gone through hell and back, who has suffered and lost, pitted against the Avengers, is a great premise and suited for something as massive as the next Avengers movies. There are presently no other heroes who have gone through comparable experiences as Wanda’s or who might theoretically turn on the Avengers, therefore Scarlet Witch is the only choice for this. For this reason alone, skipping out on Wanda would be a mistake.
Only Kevin Feige knows for sure how Wanda Maximoff’s narrative concluded in Multiverse of Madness, but Scarlet Witch was supposed to have a longer arc. Still, Marvel has the opportunity to revive Wanda and finally give her the recognition she deserves while her future remains uncertain.
