Virgil Abloh was an American fashion designer and businessman who lived from September 30, 1980, until November 28, 2021. He started his own line of high-end streetwear clothes, Pyrex Vision, in 2012 and was named CEO of the Milan-based brand Off-White, which he created in 2013.
He is one of his generation’s most well-known and revered fashion designers. Beginning in 2018, Abloh served as the creative director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear line. At the beginning of 2021, he was given more creative authority throughout the LVMH brand.
Abloh, a professional architect who previously worked in Chicago street fashion, debuted in high fashion in 2009 when he interned at Fendi alongside rapper Kanye West from the United States. In 2010, Abloh took on the position of Creative Director at Donda, West’s creative firm.
Off-White was launched by Abloh in 2013. When Abloh joined LVMH in 2018, he became the first African-American to hold the position of artistic director at a French luxury fashion brand. That same year, Time magazine named Abloh one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
The New York Times called Abloh’s design approach, which combined luxury and streetwear fashion, transformational. According to The Wall Street Journal, he attained a level of global popularity uncommon for a designer, and he is regarded as an inspirational figure by the BBC.

Virgil established the Milan-based fashion house Off-White in 2013. The company introduced a women’s wear line in 2014 and was displayed at Paris Fashion Week the same year. Due to its distinctive use of quotation marks, capital letters, zip ties, and barricade tape imagery, the brand became well-known.
“The Ten,” a Nike shoe collaboration by Off-White, was released in 2017. Additionally, he has collaborated with Ikea to design furniture and tote bags. He introduced a range of bags with Rimowa in 2018.
Virgil was appointed artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear ready-to-wear brand in March 2018. LVMH revealed in July 2021 that it had paid an unknown sum to purchase a 60% share in Off-White. Off-White had 56 retail locations worldwide, spread over 40 countries, at the time of the acquisition.
