Man Discovered Dead in Torrance After a Standoff with Police was the Shooter in Monterey Park

Investigators have determined that the guy discovered dead inside a white cargo van following a confrontation with police in Torrance, California, is the same individual suspected of carrying out a mass shooting in Monterey Park on Saturday night, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

Officers discovered the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the standoff, according to Luna. Huu Can Tran, 72, was the suspect, according to Luna. The Los Angeles Times stated that a guy thought to be connected to the shooting at the Monterey Park dance school who was locked inside a white van near Torrance, California, has passed away.

Los Angeles County sheriff investigators are attempting to determine whether the man is the same as the one who murdered 10 people in Monterey Park. At the van’s location, SWAT officers had been engaged in a standoff for several hours.

Authorities felt the driver of the van may have shot himself after hearing a noise and ordering the occupant to exit the vehicle, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to CNN. Since SWAT teams entered the van, the driver has not yet been taken out, according to CNN crews on the scene in Torrance.

The Monterey Park City Hall will have a press conference to address the incident on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. ET). The city’s sizable Asian American community was enjoying the Lunar New Year weekend when a shooter opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park. For hours, police had been looking for the shooter.

According to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case, a firearm recovered by law enforcement in a nearby city shortly after the shooting was linked to the suspect, providing officials with his name and description. 10 additional persons were injured and taken to the hospital in addition to the 10 fatalities, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna.

The sheriff asked, “Who walks into a dance hall and guns down 20 people?”  According to the law enforcement official, the pistol that was taken from the man in Alhambra was a Cobray M11 9mm semi-automatic rifle. This weapon is made to accept 30-round magazines, allowing for rapid fire without the need to replace magazines regularly.

The bloodshed took place close to the Lunar New Year festivities in Monterey Park, which was supposed to last until nine o’clock that evening on Garvey Avenue between Garfield and Alhambra avenues. The US Census Bureau estimates that 65% of Monterey Park’s population is Asian.

Although it is yet unknown if the two distinct occurrences in Monterey Park and Alhambra are related and involve the same individual, John Miller, CNN Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst, said that  “that is the working theory right now,”  Miller stated that the police will first test-fire a bullet with the gun found in Alhambra after it was seized from the suspect.

“That will give the ATF the ability for an immediate comparison of the shell casings to see if that weapon matches the one used in Monterey Park,”  Miller added. “A match, of course connects the two incidents more definitively. If there’s not a match, it could mean that the same suspect had multiple weapons and simply entered the second location with a different one.”

The mayor of adjacent Alhambra noted that although it is too soon to determine whether the shooting was a hate crime, its effects have already been felt by one of the country’s largest communities of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Alhambra Mayor Sasha Renée Pérez tweeted, “To have this tragedy occur on Lunar New Year weekend, makes this especially painful,” “Monterey Park is home to one of the largest #AAPI communities in the country. This is a time when residents should be celebrating with family, friends and loved ones – not fearing gun violence.”

According to the city, Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, roughly 7 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, have attracted more than 100,000 visitors from all around Southern California. Uncertainty surrounds the size of the crowd that was there when shots were fired.

“Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence,” Tweeted the governor, Gavin Newsom. According to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese on Sunday, the local Lunar New Year festival, which started on Saturday and was supposed to go through Sunday, has been cancelled.

“Out of an abundance of caution and reverence for the victims, we are canceling the event that’s going to happen later today,”  Wiese added. Authorities are requesting any information from the public that could aid with their investigation. Those with information can reach the Homicide Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at (323) 890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the tragedy in Monterey Park is at least the 33rd major shooting in the US this month. A mass shooting is one in which four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter, according to both the non-profit and CNN.
